Murfreesboro-based Maples Wedding Cakes will have the honor of having a wedding cake featured in Martha Stewart Weddings magazine this December, confirmed owner Jay Qualls.

“It is the pinnacle of flattery,” he said of having a cake featured in the prestigious magazine.

Qualls said everyone in the wedding industry dreams of being featured in Martha Stewart Weddings. Less that 10 cake designers have decorated wedding cakes for Martha Stewart Weddings.

“It is huge from a business standpoint and a personal goal standpoint,” he said.

Qualls said the magazine found him and asked him to collaborate on a wedding cake for the magazine’s 15th anniversary issue.

“They are focusing the issue on the traditional, classic symbols of love: roses, hearts, wedding bells, doves and the wedding ring,” Qualls said, adding that he was asked to collaborate on the heart cake.

Qualls said the pink and white cake is six tiered and has a calligraphy design with hearts incorporated.

“It is very beautiful,” he said. “I am very proud of it.”

The Tennessee Chapter of Mutual UFO Network has selected Murfreesboro as the location for its first conference Dec. 5.

The conference will be held at the Baymont Inn & Suites at 2230 Armory Drive from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

MUFON is expecting 100-120 attendees from all over the Southeast and the Midwest.

“Murfreesboro was chosen for the meeting because it is the geographic center of Tennessee and having a centralized location was important to us so that we could minimize the travel burden as much as possible for all Tennessee attendees, said Alyson Burgess, director of public relations for the Tennessee Chapter of MUFON.

UFO investigator Stanton Friedman is scheduled to be the featured speaker of the event. Friedman is arguably the most famous UFO investigator in the world. He has appeared on the History Channel, Larry King Live and the Discovery Channel.

Other presentations will include a lecture on basic astronomy for MUFON Field Investigators, and a presentation on the most compelling UFO close encounter cases.

Burgess said the purpose of the conference is to give UFO enthusiasts from Tennessee their “very own event that they could attend without the worry of saving up for extravagant travel expenses.

“Many UFO conferences are held out west, so it can be quite a trip for those who don't live in close proximity,” she said.

Burgess said the Tennessee Chapter of MUFON felt that the conference was important to letting the public know the organization exists in case they want to get involved in UFO research or if they have a sighting and don't know where to turn.

“Our organization strives to be open and responsive to the individuals that have had an experience that they can't explain and who want answers,” she said. “We provide investigations free of charge to those who report a UFO, and our trained investigators follow stringent scientific protocol that helps us solve many cases. All of our findings are made publicly available to those who want the information, although witness identities are kept anonymous if they so choose. Our mission, verbatim, is the scientific study of UFOs for the benefit of humanity. “

Tickets to the conference are $20 for non-MUFON members, $15 for MUFON members, and $10 for students and military personnel. Tickets can be purchased through PayPal at www.tnmufon.com.
