Consruction is under way on East Main Village, which will consist of a 9,533-square-foot retail center and 44 row-style townhouses.
Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches is preparing to open a second location near the MTSU campus, franchisee Rocky Carlson confirmed.

The new location will be at the intersection of Middle Tennessee Boulevard and East Main Street in the new East Main Village development.

“We want to cover the greatest area of Murfreesboro as we can as we are moving forward,” Carlson said, adding the new location will allow the restaurant to expand its delivery area.

Traffic and visibility makes Middle Tennessee Boulevard a great location, he said.

“We always intended to put a location on campus.”

Carlson said he hopes the new restaurant will be open by March.

He anticipates the restaurant will cater more to the college crowd and will be open late. Right now, Carlson sees the restaurant staying open to as late as 3 a.m. on weekends and to at least midnight on weekday nights.

Jimmy John's first Murfreesboro location opened just over a year ago on Thompson Lane near the intersection with Medical Center Parkway.

Jimmy John’s sandwiches are designed to be ready in as little as 30 seconds, but orders can’t stray too far from what is on the menu. Bread is baked in-house every four hours. Meats and vegetables are sliced in-house daily.

Construction is under way on East Main Village, which will consist of a 9,533-square-foot retail center and 44 row-style townhouses.

Within 30-60 days, vertical construction on the commercial center will begin, said David McGowan, president of Regent East Main LLC and Regent Homes.

The commercial center is nearly completely leased, he said.

East Main Corner Grill, an upscale sports bar, will anchor the development. Other shops include California-based yogurt shop Menchies. For more information, visit www.menchies.com.

The developer is in negotiations with a smoothie shop.

McGowan said shops will likely begin to open in April and May.

Construction of the two-story townhouses will begin in early spring, he said. Each will be approximately 1,200 square feet, have two bedrooms and a two-car garage.

The first six townhouses will face East Vine Street. The second phase of townhouses to face Middle Tennessee Boulevard will begin in mid-2010.

Here is what is predicted to happen with employment in the region during the first quarter of next year.

Nashville-Davidson-Murfreesboro-Franklin area employers expect to hire at a moderate pace during the first quarter of 2010, according to the Manpower Employment Outlook Survey.

From January to March, 14 percent of the companies interviewed plan to hire more employees, while 10 percent expect to reduce their payrolls, Manpower spokesperson Dave Patterson said. Another 70 percent expect to maintain their current staff levels and 6 percent are not certain of their hiring plans.

“Compared with the previous quarter when 11 percent of companies interviewed intended to add employees, and 12 percent planned to reduce staff levels, area hiring levels appear to be stronger,” Patterson said. “Employers are more optimistic about hiring activity as compared to one year ago, when 13 percent of companies surveyed planned to increase staff levels and 16 percent expected to cut payrolls.”

For the coming quarter, job prospects appear best in construction, durable goods manufacturing, financial activities, leisure and hospitality and other services. Employers in transportation and utilities, wholesale and retail trade, information and government plan to reduce staffing levels, while hiring in nondurable goods manufacturing, professional and business services and education and health services is expected to remain unchanged.

Of the more than 28,000 employers surveyed in the U.S., 12 percent expect to increase their staff levels during the January-March period, while 12 percent expect to reduce their payrolls. Seventy-three percent expect no change in hiring, and 3 percent are undecided about their first quarter 2010 hiring plans.
