The Edge: Downtown deli, cupcake bakery now open

An Italian-style deli is now open in downtown Murfreesboro.

3 Brothers Deli and Brew House opened in the former location of Tomato Tomato at 223 W. Main St. last week, owner Eric Fortney said. The grand opening will be celebrated Friday.

Growing up in an Italian family in Ohio inspired Fortney to open the restaurant featuring sandwiches that will be new to most who grew up around Murfreesboro, he said.

All of the meat and cheese is cut in house. The restaurant also has 20 beers on tap and 100 different types of beer in house.

Fortney said the restaurant was designed to have a vintage feel like a 1960s Italian deli in New York City.

“There is nowhere else in town where you can have food and a variety of beer,” he said of why he decided to open this type of restaurant. “It is fast and easy.”

Hours of operation are Sunday-Thursday 11 a.m.-1 a.m. and Friday and Saturday 11 a.m.-2 a.m.

Gigi’s Cupcakes celebrated its grand opening Saturday.

The Nashville-based cupcake franchise features more than 40 flavors of artfully created cupcakes.

Sisters Julie Wyatt and Jan Zamudio opened the shop at 451 N. Thompson Lane near Samurai’s Cuisine and across the street from Ashley Furniture.

Hours of operation are Monday-Saturday 10 a.m.-7 p.m.

Each cupcake is made using the freshest ingredients.

Many of the recipes date back to company founder Gina Butler’s great-great aunt who owned bakeries in Oklahoma.

Gigi's Cupcakes currently offers flavors such as White Midnight Magic Chocolate Chip, Root Beer Float, Orange Dreamsicle, Key Lime, Cookies 'n' Cream (dark chocolate cake with Baileys chocolate butter cream frosting topped with Oreo crumbles and a tiny Oreo cookie), Ginger Bread, Caramel Sugar Mama (caramel cake topped with caramel buttercream and drizzled with caramel and Sugar Babies).

Salsarita’s Fresh Cantina is now showcasing local music on Wednesday nights from 6-9 p.m.

“With no cover we are attempting to add to the nightlife of Murfreesboro and provide an outlet for up and coming artists,” said Jamie Shields, catering and marketing director. “We have been asked to host live music. We are simply providing what people have asked.”

Salsarita’s is starting out offering live music on Wednesday nights, but more nights could be added if customers respond, she said.

On Nov. 18 and 25, the adult alternative band The Slow Down will perform.

“Fans of Coldplay, John Mayer, Keane and The Cold War Kids will enjoy the sound on Wednesday,” Shields said. “In the future we foresee an eclectic mix of music. The format or type of music will only be limited by the demand. We will stage whatever the public responds to.”

Any band interested in performing at Salsarita’s should contact Shields at 474-5369 or at jshields@salsaritascatering.com/
