Clay Cup Café on the Public Square closed its doors Friday after nearly nine years in operation.
“It was one of those hard decisions that needed to be made sooner than later,” said Chris Gerbman, who owns the café with his wife, Karen. They couple also own The Country Gourmet.
Gerbman said the café as well as other restaurants were hit hard by the downturn in the economy. People not only stopped eating out as much but food prices also went up.
“Even though the economy is starting to level off, food prices haven’t gone down,” he said.
“We kind of felt like it would be better to get out now before we were in trouble and focus all of our energy on The Country Gourmet,” Gerbman added.
He said he plans to keep the Murfreesboro memorabilia that fills the 113 N. Maple St. location. Most of it will end up in storage, but some may end up at The Country Gourmet.
All of the kitchen equipment, likely including the coke machine in the window, will be auctioned off online with McLemore Auction Co. www.mclemoreauction.com. The auction will run March 17-30.

But the space at 113 N. Maple St. won’t be empty for long.
The Chef Place, owned and operated by Chef Julio Orantes, is moving from 810 Medical Center Parkway to the Public Square.
“I am really excited,” Orantes said. “I think it is going to be a great move.”
He wanted to be in the “heart of Murfreesboro” where there is more foot traffic and activity.
The Chef Place is keeping the same concept of grab and go dishes and catering.
“We are adding a really nice lunch menu, and we are going to have daily specials,” Orantes said.
The lunch menu will feature such items as salads, baked potatoes and four to five different soups daily.
“We hope to be open by the first week of May,” Orantes said.
Hours of operation will likely be Monday-Friday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday will be dedicated to catering.

Jamison Galleries of Fine Art on the Public Square is closing this week.
“We don’t want to close, but we feel that it is the right thing to do,” said Judy Jamison. “We have way too much space. We need to downsize a little bit.”
The gallery located at 109 S. Church St. showcases the paintings created by her husband Jeff Jamison.
Judy Jamison said they are not leaving Murfreesboro, and Jeff will continue to be available to clients.
The couple is considering opening another gallery if a smaller space becomes available on the Public Square.
