Beginning July 11, 2008 at the Center for the Arts, marriage takes center
stage in the romantic comedy musical “I Do! I Do!” The classic Broadway
musical, though rarely produced, is a gem that belongs in any theater lover’s jewelry box.
The story of a marriage is at the center of this intimate and nostalgic work
by Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones, the authors of “The Fantasticks.” The show
begins with Michael and Agnes on their wedding day and traces their life
together over a period of 50 years, until the day they leave their house to the next pair of newlyweds. In that time we watch them go through their wedding-night jitters, raise a family, negotiate midlife crises, quarrel, separate, reconcile and grow old together, all lovingly to the strains of a tuneful, charming score, which includes the standard “My Cup Runneth Over.”
The musical stars two local favorites — Andrew Ford and Francine Berk — in the roles of Michael and Agnes. Ford, currently heading the board of the
Center Players, has directed many shows, including “The Music Man” and
“Cinderella.” Ford has also starred in “My Fair Lady,” “Macbeth” and “The Music
Man.” His counterpart, Francine Berk, was last seen as the Fairy Godmother in “Cinderella” and in our first Broadway Cabaret night.
As a special treat for the parents of Middle Tennessee, the Center for the
Arts is proud to present our artistic child enrichment program entitled “THE PLAYGROUND” during the 2 p.m. showing of the play on Sunday, July 13. The program, in partnership with the Artsy Mama’s of Middle Tennessee, aims to
allow parents to enjoy local theater while entrusting their little ones into the capable hands of the Center for the Arts and Artsy Mamas’ staff. The children will participate in themed crafts and theater activities. Admission
to “THE PLAYGROUND” is $3 for each child or $5 for two children.
“I Do! I Do!,” presented by the Center Players, runs July 11-22, 2008 at the
Murfreesboro/Rutherford County Center for the Arts. Fridays and Saturdays at
7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and students, and $8 for children 12 and under. For ticket reservations, call
