So, Tennessee is "racing" to the top? In watching the Kentucky Derby, I note that the horse that comes out of the gate last seldom wins the roses.
Tennessee has been near the bottom of the national education pile for years. In other words, many horses got out of the gate ahead of Tennessee. Its hard to catch up when you are behind.
Question: Why behind? Answer: Lack of state (political) funding for education over many years. Time to stop blaming teachers for the failure of Tennessee politicians. In order to win the "race to the top" we are going to have to do a lot of catching up.
Start with getting off of the teachers backs. Leave their tenure and bargining rights alone. Fund their efforts. Give them support rather than criticism.
You only get to the "top" by maintaining a quality work force and academic freedom. Get the message, Nashville?
