Vehicular homicide charges were filed Tuesday against a 16-year-old boy accused of killing a passenger in his car Oct. 25 on Deerwood Avenue, Murfreesboro Police reported.

The Hendersonville boy was picked up at Station Camp High School by Detective Ed Gorham and Officer David Harrison of the Fatal Accident Crash Team and brought to the Rutherford County Juvenile Detention Center where he is being held.

Passenger Joseph S. Butler, 20, of Hendersonville died at the scene and passengers Douglas M. May, 22, and Alexander H. Russell, 16, both of Hendersonville, suffered injuries, spokesman Kyle Evans reported at the time. The boy was driving a car that struck a tree at the end of the street.

Contributing factors to the crash were alcohol and drugs, speeding and reckless driving, Evans said Wednesday.

A hearing is pending in Juvenile Court.
