Tea Party organizer speaks out about owing back taxes

Local businessman Christian Hidalgo defended his actions, when he spoke out about recent national news coverage on his tax burden.

“What the attackers failed to mention is that I've employed dozens of people over the years while running a reasonably successful business and never disputed what the IRS said I owed because I believed it was my responsibility to pay my debt,” Hidalgo said.

“I've never evaded paying my taxes and always filed,” he continued. “I've never claimed bankruptcy, defaulted on a loan or failed to make payroll. Every check has cleared and I'm determined to preserve my name and reputation.”

The owner of Navigation Advertising was No. 2 on Countdown with Keith Olbermann’s nightly “World’s Best Person’s List” on Tuesday night for owing more than $80,000 in back taxes while protesting federal taxes as a key organizer in the Tea Party movement.

Olbermann also referred to Williamson County Republican and Tea Partier Michael Patrick Leahy, who was recently exposed as having more than $100,000 in tax liens.

Hidalgo’s tax burden came to light after the Rutherford County Democratic Party issued a press release Tuesday allegedly he has more than $80,000 in state and federal tax lien’s against his businesses he has owned.

Hidalgo said he does owe money to the IRS, but is “faithfully paying it off through an installment agreement with the IRS.”

His actions have not put anyone at risk, contrary to what the RCDP press release said, and his involvement with the Tea Party movement is the only reason why he was singled out, he said.

“I'm not a candidate nor seeking public office. I'm simply an amateur community organizer who believes American is headed the wrong direction,” Hidalgo said.

“I'm also determined to keep up the good fight of telling our runaway government (Republican and Democrat) they've gone too far and if that brings on more negative consequences I can live with that,” he added.

Thanks for letting us know the other side of the story. I appreciate all you're doing, Christian!

By: ItsGood on 8/7/09
"community organizer" - Christian, you are Presidential material. Keep up the good work.

By: canalou on 8/7/09
See, the Post is "fair and balanced.."

By: diddlede on 8/7/09
Glad you were allowed to explain your side of the story. Keep up the good work and good luck in what you are trying to accomplish.

By: ItIsMeAgain on 8/7/09
You are still a tax dodge if you don't pay your taxes. Where were you protesters when Bush was running he country into the ditch? Oh! That's right; Bush was a white guy so his 2+ trillion dollar debt was OK.

By: Refusetobesilenced on 8/7/09
Bush or Obama's skin color has absolutely zero forbearance on the issue. Only a racist would make such an idiotic statement.

By: Justus on 8/7/09
It's a good story. You stick to it.

By: peteach2002 on 8/8/09
You stay classy Tea Party "community" organizers!

By: soon2b6 on 8/8/09
The Tea Party movement must be working if the Lib.Dem's took this all the way to Olbermann and the National spotlight. Small businesses are being taxed to death and this man who is trying to pay his taxes and standing up for his rights gets humiliated by Keith Olbermann, the most Liberal person on National television, what a shame. The "Gordon Gang" must be getting just a little bit nervous! As for ItIsMeAgain, wow, you need help if you think this has any skin color implications, but you probably don't have to pay taxes anyways, so I can see your point here.

By: ItIsMeAgain on 8/8/09
My taxes last year were ove 36,000. I paid them. soon2b6, did you even make that much? I doubt it. If you think that the tea baggers, the birthers and all the other wing nuts aren't protesting Obama's race; you just haven't been paying attention.

By: soon2b6 on 8/8/09
ItIsMeAgain... my goodness, if you were in that high of tax bracket and owed $36,000 on your '08 Federal taxes I really feel bad for you in the next few years because you are about to get slaughtered in higher taxes. Just give it about 12 months to set in and you too will probably join a Tea Party .... and it won't have anything to do about skin color whatsoever as it doesn't now. Get your head out of the sand ... they are coming after your checkbook Me, and fast!

By: Ponycar on 8/8/09
This is so typical of the liberals. They demonize all who oppose them. Keep organizing your tea parties sir. I'll be there.

By: ItIsMeAgain on 8/8/09
I don't mind paying my taxes. Membership dues to belong to the greatest club in the world, the United States of America. We have roads, banks, courts, schools, and even national defense because we pay taxes. Now we will have national health care because we have a true leader with vision. It is a bright new day in America and the haters can't stand it. They feed off avarice and hate and the problems are getting resolved so the hate is disappearing. They need to gin up more hate. Bottom line is, pay your taxes, then you can complain.

As for ponycar: if you want to hear people demonized listen to Russel Limbaugh, Valentine, or Faux News. See how the Bushites treated others. See who is threatening violence at town hall meetings. It certainly isn't the progressives.

By: ItsGood on 8/8/09
Obama is black? Thought he was half white?

By: soon2b6 on 8/8/09
For me it is not about hate at all, it is having the government turning socialist on us. The government now owns; The Banks, The Insurance Companies, The Automobile Industry, and maybe (maybe not) my Health Plan. Our Federal Income Taxes are about to go up substantially to pay for this. Also, with almost 100% certainty, there will be a "Federal Sales Tax" slapped on us as well. You are right about one thing, the new President is really coming out of the gate with his leadership and vision. But he ain't really callin' the shots though is he... that'd be Pellosi & Barney... who have Mr. Gordon and hundreds others like him in their hip pocket... who (for example)just yesterday ordered 4 new 737 jet airplanes for Congress to use because there other 3 were getting old and they also felt like they needed an additional jet to add to the fleet. This is what I am talking about and it has absolutley, 100%, zero, ziltch, nadda, nothing to do with either race or hate. Hey ME, deep down, your paying allot of Membership dues there, does none of this bother you?

By: ItIsMeAgain on 8/8/09
Old U S law. Referred to as "one drop rule". If you have one drop of black blood you are black. Another gift from the haters. Of course, since Obama is only half black they should only have the tea bagging parties every other month.

By: ItIsMeAgain on 8/8/09
The F22's bothered me. The Osprey bothers me. The new aircraft carrier bothers me. The money stolen by Halliburton bothers me. KBR killing soldiers bothers me. Blackwater murdering people in my name bothers me. People being tortured and denied their human rights In my name bothers me. Health care for all Americans doesn't bother me. But, thanks for asking.

By: soon2b6 on 8/8/09
ME- Your $36,000 membership fee going to $54,000 is not going to bother you? Your OK with that? If you are , than I applaud your financial sacrifice to this nation. Me, I'm thinking of forcing my employer to let me go.... so I can sit at home and get my free ride with half of the other people, on your dime, why bother? Good news is that we will now be on the same side! You and I...ME.
That doesn't "bother you"... does it?

By: ItIsMeAgain on 8/8/09
Why doesn't it bother you that Ernie Burgess is raising your property taxes? Is it OK for him to raise taxes because he is a white guy? Why is nobody protesting ole' Ernie? You even have him attend and speak at your tea baggings. What is up with that?

By: soon2b6 on 8/8/09
"Me" you are simply racist, who is officially wasting our time reading your opinions.

By: ItIsMeAgain on 8/8/09
Why can't you answer the question about your property taxes? What are you, an infant?

By: soon2b6 on 8/8/09
You have lost your credibility "ME", you are done.

By: Ponycar on 8/9/09
The only violence at the town hall meetings were from the union thugs. I realize though that you're just another Obamunist who thinks Obama can do no wrong. The tea parties aren't racist, Obamas buddy Jememiah Wright is racist. Dude, your insulting your intellegence.

By: Dave42 on 8/9/09
Hey ItIsMeAgain, I'm a card carrying Right Wing Extremist. I believe in the Constitution, the Declaration of Indepencence, and the Bill of Rights. BHO, in his very short time as "President" has spent more tax money than all the other Presidents combined. He has the same philosophy and FDR had and if FDR had let well enough alone and not tried to spend his way out of the Depression it would have lasted maybe a couple of years instead of as long as it did. It took a World War to get the country out of the Great Depression. Every economist knows you can't spend your way out of a recession like the one caused by Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Ried. They were the ones that kept telling Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac to keep giving loans to people who couldn't afford them at variable rates, not fixed rates. Now, the violence at a Town Hall meeting was perpetrated on a black man who was not selling, but giving away his merchandise mostly of which were flags and pins with symbol and words of the Gadsden Flag. The coiled rattlesnake with the words "Don't Tread on Me". Union Members beat him up, took his property, and yelled "Who do you think you are anyway?" These people were not a mob but a bunch of concerned citizens voicing their discontent with the Socialistic turn our elected officials have made. Obama care will be no better than what Canada, France, England, Germany, or Cuba have. Government officials telling you what kind of healthcare they think you can have, not doctors who know a whole lot more than they do.

By: ItIsMeAgain on 8/9/09
If we can has healthcare as good as Germany, Canada, France, England, and Cuba we should go for it. None of the cited healthcare systems are ranked 37th in the world, like ours is. Better care for less money? Sign me up! If you think the paid right wing rabble rousers are adding anything to the debate at the town hall meetings you need to get your face away from Faux Noise. The unions are there to protect everyone's right to speak. I just hope we have a meeting here and some of you try to shout down the rest of the community's voices. I, for one, am not afraid of you and your thuggery.

By: ItIsMeAgain on 8/9/09
Wondering why none of you are answering the question about Ernie and the property taxes. Could it be that your refusal to answer is your answer?

You should really stop listening to Russell and read a book for christ's sake.

By: Deflatinghype on 8/9/09
Wow, how much more hypocritical can you get? "They feed off avarice and hate and the problems are getting resolved so the hate is disappearing." BULLS#@$. You're sitting here attempting to make it a racial issue and drumming up hate. The hate isn't disappearing because people like you are perpetuating it. How come you didn't answer about the black conservative getting attacked by union thugs, two of whom were white? Selective reading or is silence your answer?
I'd also be willing to wager that you don't even GROSS 36 grand in a years time with your grammar I.E.- "If we can has healthcare", "ya'll hatin'", "tea bagging" etc. Like most brainwashed liberals you're looking for something for free and will go to any extent to get it even lying. Pathetic.
If Germany, France, Canada, England and Cuba have such good health care why the hell to their wealthy citizens come here for surgery? Why do the people in those countries complain and hate their systems?

By: momx5 on 8/9/09
Back to the original article...If every community organizer needs to be perfect in every aspect of their life before they speak out against an oppressive, invasive, over-intrusive, and self serving government, we'd all sit quietly while America is taken over by power grabbers. I'm fed up with both sides. Quit name calling and let's get some serious discussions going.
READ THE BILLS, get the info, make intelligent choices.
Paying $36K in taxes because an employer took it out of your paycheck for you is a far cry from owing $80K because you PRODUCED 4 times that while you were paying everybody elses taxes/healthinsurance/social security that was forced on you by the same government you protest.

By: Tuffgirl on 8/9/09
Christian Hidalgo owes you and me the people who bother to pay taxes$80,000 He calims to be the founder and creative director of Navigation Advertising, LLC (navigationadvertising.com), is the producer and director of numerous documentaries, television commercials and other media products.Christian also has over 25 years of experience in advertising, marketing, design, web-based communication, scripting, storyboarding, and media production.Christian received his education at The Art Institute of Atlanta and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He claims to be pretty smart, why would he defraud the tax payers of $80,000. He works with business every day, they pay their taxes like all good Americans.

By: ItIsMeAgain on 8/9/09
I am my employer. Just keep guessing, wingnut.

By: HuskyLover on 8/9/09
Careful what you post - the liberals are going to report you to the White House's 'snitch line' if you speak against the Messiah's health care plan.

flag@whitehouse.gov

Google it.

By: Dave42 on 8/9/09
Hey ItIsMeAgain, I suppose you also think it's right for legal citizens to supplement health insurance for the millions of Illegal Trespassers who claim to have rights under our Constitution even though they are criminals by breaking FEDERAL law by sneaking into our country and stealing jobs from honest hard working U.S. Citizens because that is one of the things that is in that healthcare bill that Pelosi, Ried, and the other liars in Washington have put in and refuse to take out of the language of the bill.

By: SocEtTuem on 8/10/09
One has to wionder if the likes of Turbo-Tax Cheat Timmy Geithner, No tax Tommy Daschle and every one of the other Obama democratic nominees to had cheated or not paid taxes won places on Olberman's list. Chris get's credit for paying his debt which our own Treasury Secretary ignored until he became a nominee and suddenly saw the light.

By: canalou on 8/10/09
If druggy Limbaugh, abandone ship Palin, tax debter Hidalgo and convict/gambler Wilson are your out-front leaders, I think America put you in your place in the last presidential election...

By: overhere on 8/10/09
No takers on those upset about Ernest Burgess raising property taxes? Going once. Going Twice.

I for one am disappointed in Burgess. He campaigned on reforming county government and making it more efficient. He said we could cut departments and save money. Do more with less.

No cuts. No room to cut. More schools needed because we are growing faster than we can imagine. And we just bought 1.7 acres in Rockvale for $100,000. Oh and we are being sued by the Sheltons.

It's been a good ride. I really hope he doesn't run again.

By: ItIsMeAgain on 8/10/09
Don't want to pay for healthcare for illegals either. You overstate the problem. Care to try again with a bit more fact and a bit less hate?

By: Gourmetman on 8/10/09
Overstate the problem? 5 states are home to 40 percent of the uninsured. Guess which ones they are....California, New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, and Nevada. "Overstated", you're a moron.

By: overhere on 8/10/09
I'd like to know where you got that statistic gourmetman? Please post the link.

By: ItIsMeAgain on 8/10/09
Gourmetman, either show your source or shut your uninformed, making-stuff-up yap. You are a loser. If you have nothing of substance to add, just go back to mumbling on the street corner.

By: Gourmetman on 8/10/09
Wow, this is going to be too easy. If sticking with the facts and telling it like it is makes me a loser then I'd hate to know what to call a moron who constantly perpetuates racism and lies about his income. A POS I suppose.
Alrighty dipstick, since you obviously don't have the intellectual capacity to fact find and research on your own I'll give you a freebie (after all thats the only thing you're after anyway). Go to wikipedia and type in "uninsured in the united states" and you'll get the 05-07 state by state statistics (although the info is widely available elsewhere). The top five at that time were the same as now with the exception of Florida and Mississippi being in Nevada and California's place. That has since changed according to the current census takers that have been on all the major news outlets, including (primarily) CNN. Read em' and weep moron. Now drink you a glass of stfu and sit in the corner like the punk you are that just got owned.
Its hilarious that "overhere" is harping in another discussion about special interests and critics not having the facts yet neglects to look at census info. Ridiculous.

By: billw241 on 8/10/09
I don't understand why this isn't a clean cut issue. The man didn't pay taxes AND this exposition was politically motivated. I'm not picking sides.

Regardless, the man didn't pay taxes. His side of the story is irrelevant.

The operation of his business had to have generated at least some of the tax debt via one rout or another (per the records).
So, the argument of "creating jobs" could easily be construed as a byproduct of, or abetted by his delinquency. Could those jobs have been created if he payed his taxes?

There's no reason to turn a simple discussion and unnecessarily regurgitated press-release into an issue of race, healthcare or anything else.

By: ItIsMeAgain on 8/10/09
Wikipedia? Are you SERIOUS!?!?! Tell me where in the bill; page and paragraph; where it says ANYTHING about illegal immigrants. Read something and stay away from Faux News, you idiot.

By: ItIsMeAgain on 8/10/09
And still no takers on Ernie and the property taxes?

By: soon2b6 on 8/10/09
billyboy1234- the man got behind on his high taxes, filing appropriatley every year, having audits, & paying it off as you would your credit card. Scrambling to run a small business.
"MeAgainandAgainandAgain"... since when did one man (Burgess) or woman... one person alone... decide and was able to raise property taxes on their own. That is why we have a County Commish! Ernie ain't making these decisions on his own is he? I sure hope not, there are plenty of Dem's on "The Commish". I think you might have just divuldged yourself, personally, Mr.T! Ha!
We need more educated people on this forum, really we do. This is a poor discussion that I have been off of for a few days to enjoy. Mr. Hidalgo has not been convicted of tax evasion, he has not been charged with any wrong doings, he simply operates a good small business that has been killed with high taxes and is doing his level best to pay off what he owes according to the Post aricle. Am I wrong? Please, and I know you will try.....correct me.

By: soon2b6 on 8/11/09
It has been one hour and still no takers... I thought so.

By: Gourmetman on 8/11/09
Itismeagain's fascinating persuasive style at work here: Make a point based on emotion, ignore the obvious when said emotional point is dismantled, then post a lame insult and generic question as the counter argument. That is about as effective as labeling people "racist" because you don't agree with them.
Obama has said, proudly and often, "I am going to give health insurance to 47 million Americans who are now without coverage." That 47 million statistic includes illegal immigrants, who virtually all lack insurance. In fact, about one in four of those lacking insurance is here illegally. And they are, by far, the group most in need of health insurance.
Both of you tools asked for evidence, I present it and you ignore it. You are exactly what you claim others to be, a hypocritical brain washed fool. It is obvious your ability to read and follow a topic is as good as your ability to construct a proper sentence and form a coherent thought. Which is to say nonexistent. Since I've exposed you for the uneducated, unemployed, hood rat you are so I won't be thread jacking this topic any longer. Enjoy your crow dipstick.

By: overhere on 8/11/09
Gourmetman. I did what you said. Only I used a search engine: Google. Not wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a reliable source since it can be edited by anyone at any time.

Here is what I found. From 2005 from the federal department of health and Human Services. Overview of the Uninsured in the United States: An analysis of the 2005 Current Population Survey.
http://aspe.hhs.gov/health/reports/05/uninsured-cps/index.htm.
Look under the link by race and then by citizenship. Now I KNOW this was 4 years ago. But still. Your theory doesn't hold water and this agency is the one who track this stat.

And now for the data you talk about. Census data. I found this info from the 2007. It is a comparison of 2005 - 2006 data. but yet again. The most uninsured are not hispanic they are white. Please refer to page 21 of the document below.
http://www.census.gov/prod/2007pubs/p60-233.pdf

So I am not sure where you are getting your numbers on wikipedia. When the census is finished next year, we will have new data, more update to date data, that is not driven by special interests.

By: Gourmetman on 8/11/09
"So I am not sure where you are getting your numbers on wikipedia." You yet again fail at reading comprehension-
"According to the Census Bureau, people of Hispanic origin were the most affected by being uninsured; nearly a third of Hispanics lack health insurance. However, this rate decreased slightly from 2006 to 2007, from 15.3 to 14.8 million, a decrease of 2 percentage points (34.1% to 32.1%). The state with the highest percentage of uninsured was Texas (24.1% average for three years, 2004-2006). New Mexico has the second highest percentage of residents without health insurance at 22%."
*yawn*

By: overhere on 8/11/09
Do you not understand that wikipedia is not a reputable source? Information there is not guaranteed accurate. Here is the tag line for the site.

Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit.
www.wikipedia.org/ - The important word being.......ANYONE

So I went straight to the source, the census bureau. The numbers are not the same. I can tell you did not follow my links. You're just being stubborn now. And that is so childish. Come on. Somebody is giving you facts that disprove the lies you tell. And all you have is *yawn*?

I went to wikipedia and the article you reference. Here is a section that you decided to leave out.

"Non-citizens are more likely to be uninsured than citizens, with a 43.8% uninsured rate. This is attributable to a higher likelihood of working in a low-wage job that does not offer health benefits, and restrictions on eligibility for public programs. However, most of the uninsured in the US are citizens (78%)."

the Quote you give about the four states having the most illegal immigrants as uninsured is from a study done by the Employee Benefit Research Institute. or www.ebri.org. They are based in DC at 1100 13th St. NW, Suite 878, Washington, DC 20005.

For a small fee of between $4000 and $28,500, you too can be a sustaining member of this lobbying group. Their sustaining member list reads like the wall street who's who. Go ahead. Find the article you read. Read the footnote on your facts. And then follow the link to their site.

So again. Gourmetman. You are taking facts from LOBBYISTS!! and portraying it as truth and facts.

By: Gourmetman on 8/11/09
WRONG AGAIN. You're telling me to reference page 21. Do you even know what is on page 21???? Poverty rates by age 1956-2006, so I don't have a clue what you're getting at. You made the statement that you couldn't find it on Wikipedia so I plainly showed it to you. The same info is available everywhere and the figures are the same.
Now since you seem so confused let me show you the math. I originally stated that 40 percent of the uninsured are illegal immigrants. As you will see on page 29 not page 21 that yes whites alone were the majority THREE years ago at 36,000. BUT at three years ago THE FEW foreign born non-citizens that participated totaled 10,300 which we all know is a extremely low figure due to their lack of participation. The point I'm making is that the latest census figures being leaked have a far more accurate count and the estimates are currently double the figures from 2006. Even if that weren't true (which it is) the figures from 2006 equates to 20% of total uninsured THEN. Who wants to pay for that 20 percent's insurance besides Barry S? Not me.

By: soon2b6 on 8/11/09
"ItsMe" ... no response to my last post? As Gourmetman and OverHere battle it out, you quit on me. First it was about 'race', and then it was about 'hate'. You lost on both.
Then it moved to Mr. Burgess and you lost again. You used to be so vocal?
Whatsupwitdat? "Come out and play"....

By: baccawow on 8/19/09
The guy didn't pay taxes which means he's either incompetent or a cheat or both.

Regardless, why would you ever trust your advertising to this guy?
