Tea Party organizer called out for owing back taxes

A Murfreesboro businessman and Tea Party organizer made national news Tuesday night on MSNBC’s Countdown with Keith Olbermann.

Navigation Advertising’s Christian Hidalgo was No. 2 on Olbermann’s nightly “World’s Best Person’s List” for owing more than $80,000 in back taxes while protesting federal taxes as a key organizer in the Tea Party movement.

“That’s right another tax protestor that’s just another tax dodger,” Olbermann said, referencing Williamson County Republican Michael Patrick Leahy, who was recently exposed as having more than $100,000 in tax liens.

Hidalgo’s tax burden came to light after the Rutherford County Democratic Party issued a press release Tuesday allegedly he has more than $80,000 in state and federal tax lien’s against his businesses he has owned.

“For several years, Hidalgo has not paid portions of both state and federal taxes, forcing both the state and federal government to spend time and resources to issue several liens against his property and assets,” the RCDP press release said.

Hidalgo would not comment on the situation, but in a previous interview said he supports the Tea Party movement because he disagrees with the Rep. Bart Gordon’s stances and Obama administration’s policies.

“The main focus of this Tea Party is to let Bart Gordon know we want our country to be led responsibly and to live within our means,” Hidalgo said.

The Tea Party movement started as a non-partisan, nonprofit event to protest taxation and the federal government’s use of taxpayer dollars.

Protesters are upset with how the Obama administration has increased the national debt with the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the more than $700 billion stimulus package, and financing it with bond sales to the Chinese government, Hidalgo said previously.

“The Tea Party is a opportunity for citizens to voice disapproval of our government’s massive spending and socialization of our country,” he said.

Demonized !!!!! How dare he exercise his right to free speech and assembly !!!!

By: Justus on 8/5/09
We ALL have the right to free speech, even Oberman.

By: matt73557 on 8/5/09
Since he owes back taxes, Hidalgo must have been overlooked for a cabinet position in the Obama White House along with all the other tax dodgers who are leading our government.....

By: thinkingman on 8/5/09
Republicans have absolutely no shame. This idiocy is topped only by the georgis Congressman who criticised Obama for not wearing a flag on his lapel last year during the campaign. When asked by Dan Abrahams why he himself wasn't wearing one, the man stammered and mumbled something about "changing jackets." Unbelievably stupid people seem to gravitate to the right side of the spectrum.

looks like hidalgo did exercise his right to free speech, he just had somebody else call him out with some more free speech. you republicans should stop whining.

By: ItsGood on 8/5/09
matt, so TRUE but the Dems will not recognize that their side leads the way on non payment of taxes, starting at the top leadership.

“The main focus of this Tea Party is to let Bart Gordon know we want our country to be led responsibly and to live within our means,” Hidalgo said.

Maybe the country could live within its' means if all the tax dodgers would pay what they owe.
Have you noticed how all the folks who wave their banner of family values/religion/politics/taxes/or whatever the highest seem to be hypocrites.

By: tlsa98 on 8/5/09
Thinking man, are you sure you're awake? Let's talk about no shame... osama, oops I mean Obamas friends and appointees, Ron Kirk, Tom Daschle, Kathleen Sebelius, Charles Rangel are all proven tax cheating democrats. So what does obama do about it? He appoints Timothy Geithner as treasury secretary!!!! He then stood stood by Geithner after it was revealed that Geithner was a proven tax cheat. And he also said he would have the most ethical administration ever??!!! Are you sure you want talk about no shame?? Again.. wake up before you post.

tisa98, people like thinkingman will leave the blinders on just to hate and not understand the facts.

Really, I ask, those who supported B.O. really think they were going to get what they got? Are they really proud of B.O. and his appointees? If so, we got troubles in USA ( not sure if using USA is politically correct anymore but it is for me ).

So Felixstow, you are calling me a hypocrite?
I don't owe any back taxes, I am a conservative, I'm an NRA member, I support all our fighting men and women, and I support the TEA Parties. What is there about that that makes me a hypocrite?

By: canalou on 8/5/09
Mostly, most Americans are scared of NRA folks, or anyone who tries to impose their brand of Americanism, religion, patriotism on others....I know Christian, and he's not a bad person....but I don't agree with his attempt at forcing his brand of Americanism on others....

Think I might stop paying my taxes if it is all going to things I believe are wrong. A number of years ago three squares and a cot was more than I had. Putting my feet up and letting the state take care of me instead of working can look appealing at times.

“The main focus of this Tea Party is to let Bart Gordon know we want our country to be led responsibly and to live within our means,” Hidalgo said.

Priceless. Those that live in glass houses should not throw stones. Responsible people pay their taxes...regardless if they agree with them or not. You may not like our government or the people running it, but good citizens must respect it.

By: jg13 on 8/6/09
Why is this a story? Doesn't it stand to reason that a person who leads a movement to oppose taxes, doesn't pay their taxes. I'm perfectly fine with this clown not paying his taxes as long as my taxes don't go toward putting out his fires, law enforcement protection, sending his kids to public schools, owning property, driving, going to the park, walking on sidewalks, voting, enjoying the protection of our military, utilizing disaster relief, eating food from subsidized farms, etc, etc, etc, etc.

He can have all the tea bags he wants though. Assuming he's willing to pay the sales tax.

By: Simcha on 8/6/09
There are two sides to every story. Has anyone consulted Mr. Hidalgo or checked the facts? He is a man of integrity and this article does not paint a true picture of the situation!

By: Culpepper on 8/6/09
"Hidalgo would not comment on the situation"

Simcha, did you read the article? Typical...

By: billw241 on 8/6/09
Glad to see the First Amendment is alive and well here at the Post. I'll just assume this comment will be deleted as well, though this time an explanation of your censorship would be courteous.

My point was, Hidalgo not paying the state and federal government ripped off his community, whom the tea party organization claims to support at a grass roots level.

By: Refusetobesilenced on 8/7/09
You'd be correct Bill. They've made a habit out of deleting comments they don't agree with. They've went as far as to ban my IP address although that obviously hasn't done them much good ;).

By: beamer on 8/8/09
canlou, Do you believe in the Constitution? You say you don't want someone to be "FORCING OR IMPOSING THEIR BRAND" on you but you want to FORCE OR IMPOSE YOUR BRAND on others. Isn’t freedom to do and feel different a Constitutional right given to everyone or just you? Have you not read it or was taught it in school about the Constitution? How is someone carrying a gun imposing their BRAND on you? How about you driving a foreign car imposing your BRAND on me? We ALL have the same equal rights under the Constitution or do you not understand that?

If not for Bush and his Bushiites, the catastrophic circumstances America finds itself in, would not exist...where was Hidalgo's howling when Bush lied about invading a nation that did not, could not invade the U.S.?

By: HuskyLover on 8/9/09
Be very careful of what you post here. The Liberals are going to report you to the White House if you voice opposition to the Messiah's health care plan.

flag@whitehouse.gov

Google it.

By: HuskyLover on 8/9/09
Curious, just how did Bush destroy our economy and create the economic mess we're in? By creating soaring deficits due to an attack on our soil and catastrophic weather? If so, just what the heck are obama's crushing debts going to do in the next few years?

Get a new talking point, liberals.

By: ItIsMeAgain on 8/9/09
Huskylover, why don't you go back to Alaska where you earned your screen name?

By: HuskyLover on 8/9/09
Awww, can't think of anything intelligent to say so you throw insults?

Typical.

By: ItIsMeAgain on 8/9/09
That is about all you folks understand. I have seen the videos of he town hall meetings and the Klan rallies (oh, I meN the tea bag parties).

By: Gourmetman on 8/10/09
Klan rallies? Give it up racist. Tea bag is right b/c we're about to collectively "tea bag" Barry's health care plan back to where it came from.

By: billw241 on 8/10/09
Dear Post,

I would love to know why my initial comment was censored while ItIsMeAgain's imbecility is allowed to grace your site. I can only assume his/her opinion aligns with your own? While I'm glad you decided to cover this story while no other outlet thought it prudent, your censorship is unnerving.

On another note,

ItIsMeAgain: Really? That's your idea of an intelligent retort? Local political bumpkins and rhetoric aside, please reevaluate the reason you chose to voice your opinion on anything other than a hand held cardboard sign.
