TBI probes death of inmate

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is probing the death of an inmate booked into the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center Friday after a pursuit.

Driver Andron Reed was charged after a pursuit by Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers and booked into the jail Friday afternoon.

TBI spokeswoman Kristin Helm reported TBI was asked to open an investigation into the death of the inmate who arrested by THP for DUI and other charges Friday night.

"He was uncooperative during arrest and combative during booking process," Helm reported. "He was restrained and became unresponsive then was taken to the hospital. He died later Saturday afternoon. The incident is under investigation and will be turned over to the DA when complete."

Sheriff’s spokesman Dan Goodwin said the sheriff’s office is cooperating with the TBI probe but could not release any more information.

Department of Safety spokesman Mike Browning said THP Trooper Michael Cummins clocked the driver traveling at 86 mph in a 70 mph speed zone about 3:24 p.m. Friday on Interstate 24 at the 72-mile marker near Almaville Road.

Reed increased his speed to 106 mph during the pursuit, Browning said.

Trooper Michael Morgan joined in the pursuit at the 80 mm near South Church Street.

“The driver wrecked at the 89-mile marker (near Buchanan Road) when he struck a commercial vehicle,” Browning said. “There were no injuries. I was told he walked into the jail on his own two feet.”

Cummins charged Reed with felony evading arrest, two counts of felony reckless endangerment, two counts of assault on Cummins and Morgan, DUI, resisting arrest, speeding, failing to wear a seat belt and failure to show proof of insurance.

“There were no injuries. I was told he walked into the jail on his own two feet.”

It happens, similar to actress Natasha Richardson a few months ago.

I believe it was a mistake to take an intoxicated person straight to jail after an accident. Alcohol dulls pain. He should have been checked for internal injuries first.

"He apparently died Saturday at Middle Tennessee Medical Center." Apparently died at the hospital? Seems to be a lot of info on his crimes yet no info as to where or why he died.

He ran assaulted police and probably deputys and all I've read is this poor guy should of gone to the hospital first! Truth is he is probably familiar with the inside of a jail and didn't care at all about u and would of robbed u for no good reason! As for a lot of knowledge of his charges but little on his cause of death!!! Ur an idiot the charges are based off what officers saw for police and county to speak on death an autopsy must be performed or they would be speaking out of turn! But clearly ur a genius that would have known if u just saw the body!!! Without police we would live in a horrible society but they seem to be the ones we point the finger at not the POS that always does wrong!

I totally agree with Muleteam6....If he hadn't been committing any criminal activity in the first place then he wouldn't be where he is now. Thank god no innocent people were hurt during the pursuit. Good job to our law enforcement officers!!!!

A serious criminal violation endangering the motoring public and someone is worried that he was processed properly.

Wow...settle down Muleteam6. I am in no way condonig his behavior or questioning the actions of the police. I would just like to know what led up to the death. The article just states he apparently died at the hospital - nothing more. Very vague to say the least. Did he "apparently die" at the hospital or was he already dead? Was he walking and talking at the jail? Was he unresponsive at the jail? Was there an altercation? You call me an idiot because I want to know the facts. Well, an idiot is one who does not want to know the facts and just accepts the written word as truth. You say without Police we would live in a horrible society......News Flash Mule - we already do.

After a crash, anything could have happened. Concussion, anyurism, internal injuries. Just wait for the coroners report and all the information will be published. He shouldn't have been speeding in the first place, nor been combative with the officers.

I don't care if he was adolf hitler himself; in this country we have rules and laws in place when we take a defendant into custody. We have a checks and balances system to make sure everybody does their job right. We don't have all the facts here. When we do, then accusions (if warranted) should be made.

If his injuries were such that he should have been transported to the hospital instead of jail, then the police/jail screwed up, no matter how much of a bad guy he was.

The man was drunk, a condition which may well have masked any neurological clues that he was suffering from a head injury or other potential internal injuries. Moreover, it is not uncommon for head injury or some internal injury symptoms to be delayed. This leads me to suspect Reed was not OK at the time of his arrest. No age is given for the driver but a normal, healthy adult male doesn't die as a consequence of being restrained unless he vomited and aspirated or had some kind of injury. He probably should have been checked out after the wreck (and he may have been, I do not know) One thing is certain, people who deal with vehicular accidents on a daily basis know or should know that serious internal injuries do not always immediately manifest themselves.

In any event, an autopsy should make it very clear if there was some kind of brain or internal injury if any existed. I would hesitate to say anyone dropped the ball here until those results are known, but if there was any negligence it should be addressed from the standpoint of a criminal complaint. What the guy did was serious but surely did not rise to a death penalty offense. When someone is taken into custody and restrained, it becomes the responsibility of the restraining authority to assure his safety. When that person dies in their custody, it merits, indeed requires, a thorough and open investigation.

cops ain't doctors. leave diagnosing to the pros. anyone after an accident SHOULD be taken to the hospital, but at 0300, cops were probably taken away from their coffee and figured they had an actual education, and could diagnose this guy. WRONG. accident victims that are being arrested should be taken to hospital for observation first.

By: mr.right on 8/17/09
Dillon- nobody said the cops are doctors and nobody knows if there was an ambulance on scene. At "0300" (as you call it), it was actually 1524 or 03:24 P.M. the trooper wasnt eating doughnuts he was running radar on I-24. So i suggest you put your doughnut down and read the article so when you comment you wont have such low reading comprehension. Accident victims who are arrested usually sign a release form that the EMTS have. But like i already stated, we dont know if EMTS were even out there. Wait for the TBI to do their investigation and all (except for the arrestee) will be cleared.

I agree, cops are not physicians, all the more reason for these people to be checked out by someone beyond the level of an EMT. It appears he did not die from any trauma suffered in the accident (per the state medical examiner). The ME also asserted he was not beaten, as claimed by Octavius Reed who says he heard Andron Reed being beaten at the jail. The only thing left to do is wait for the toxicology report. The family always has the option of a second autopsy by a pathologist of their choice.

By: curiousgeorge on 8/17/09
I agree he should have been checked out, if nothing else by EMT's......but, they actually took a statement from the one that was with him? Why would he say "no, he wasn't touched" geez........there are people out there that look to lay the blame on anyone they can to detere it from themself. Bottom line, it is a shame for this person's family and loved ones, but, when you live a life of crime, do you not realize it will come to an end, be it either in jail or dead?
