A lot of Derby-themed foods are traditional Southern fare, and we are going to put some new spins on these. We will be doing some slow grilling; strawberries and green tomatoes will be in season, and of course, we'll be having great mint juleps!” Murphree said.

Proceeds from “A Taste of the Derby” will fund Rutherford LEAP’s laptop program in a new Rutherford County middle school for the 2010-2011 school year. LEAP’s equipment costs for the 2010 – 2011 school year are projected at $99,200, and the group hopes to raise a large portion of that sum through the Derby event.

Rutherford LEAP’s mission is to provide public school students in Rutherford County with the ability to become technologically advanced learners through the consistent, innovative use of a one-to-one laptop program, preparing them to “leap” forward into the future.
