The Murfreesboro Police Department, in cooperation with the National Center for Missing and exploited Children, will host “Take 25” event from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 25 at Patterson Park Community Center.

“Take 25” is a national child safety campaign encouraging parents to take time on May 25th, National Missing Children’s Day, to talk with their children about ways to stay safe from child abduction and about other safety topics. First declared a nationwide day by President Ronald Reagan in 1983, the day serves as an annual opportunity to renew efforts to locate and reunite missing children with their families as well as promotes a dialogue between children, families, and communities about child safety.

Locally, the Murfreesboro Police Department, Fire Department, Community Anti-Drug Coalition of Rutherford County, Rutherford County Emergency Medical Service, and other community groups will be on hand to present information to children and families regarding important safety information. The event is free and families are encouraged to attend.

“Take 25” offers the following advice regarding child safety: Teach kids to ask permission before leaving the home to play. Teach young children their full name, address, and telephone number. Teach children how and when to call for help (911) Teach children to keep the door to the home locked and not answer the door when home alone. Set rules about how to answer the phone when home alone. Teach children to never approach a vehicle unless they are a trusted friend or family member. Learn about the internet and who your children’s “online” friends are as you would your child’s other friends.
