In January, the Nashville Fairgrounds held a “Tribune to the Fairgrounds” wrestling card that included a main event that matched up long-time adversaries Jerry “The King” Lawler and Superstar Bill Dundee.
According to promoter, Marcus Pastorius fans were lined up all the way to Nolensville Road.
“It was a wrestling revival here,” he said of the attendance.
Fast-forward to May 14, and they are going to do it again.
This time, however, the main event will be a tag-team showdown between two teams that have been going at it since the 1980s.
So, let’s take a trip on the expressway as the Midnight Express (comprised of Dennis Condrey and “Beautiful” Bobby Eaton) face the Rock N Roll Express (Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson). The feud was started back in the ’80s and continued off and on throughout the years in several different organizations.
“This is a piece of history,” Morton said. “I couldn’t ask for anything better than to wrestle in Nashville.”
While his opponent Dennis Condrey said these two teams match well with each other.
“We still give the fans a great match,” he said. “We have been doing this for more than 25 years.”
Both of the rivals agree, they are really looking forward to coming to the Music City and relive history.
Another huge tag-team match takes place on the same night as long-time local wrestlers “Dangerous” Doug Gilbert teams with “Wildfire” Tommy Rich to face Wolfie D and his partner, “Roaddog” BG James.
James has spent some time in WWE and TNA wrestling, and last month as part of “Wrestlemania” in Atlanta he inducted his father “Bullet” Bob Armstrong into the WWE Hall of Fame.
“It was an honor for me to give the induction speech for my dad,” James said. He added he enjoyed seeing his friends that worked with him a few years ago in WWE.
As for May 14, James and his partner go back to their days as teammates in Memphis.
“He is a great guy,” James said. “We are really good friends.” They hope to start a wrestling school together.
He also calls Nashville “the Mecca” of professional wrestling. “It was a real important time in my career and I really honed my skills,” James said of spending the early days in Music City.
There also a chance for you to get into a tag-team matches that night.
Murfreesboro native, “Dirty” Dutch Mantell and Condrey will have a wrestling seminar from 1-4 p.m.
The top four wrestlers will compete in a match during the preshow. For more information, contact dirtydutchmantell@gmail.com.
Murfreesboro native, Jerry Lynn, who has wrestled in every major organization, takes on Mike Bucci, formerly known as “Simon Dean” in WWE.
This will be Lynn’s first match since suffering an injury last year. He is glad to be back in the ring, but has high standards of his match.
“I’m just worried, I’m going to embarrass myself.”
However, he is glad to only have to make the short trip to the event next week.
“You don’t have to get on an airplane and travel,” he said. “It’s also nice to have friends and family come watch you.”
The event will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation and tickets start at $10. For more information, visit www.sawfairgrounds.vze.com or call 724-355-3172. MP |
