While people across the nation are eating hot wings, chips and chili next Sunday, the Mid-Cumberland Human Resource Agency’s Meals-On-Wheels program wants to tackle hunger during the “Souper Bowl.”
Meals-On-Wheels is partially funded by Rutherford County, Murfreesboro and the United Way.
“Even with all that, it’s not enough,” Meals-On-Wheels Regional Coordinator Cheryl Lisi said, explaining it costs $845 per year to provide one senior with one meal a day.
Meals-On-Wheels wants to draw attention to senior hunger and make it a “Souper Bowl” Sunday, when people ask guests for Super Bowl parties to drop their pocket change into a soup pot. The “Souper Bowl” collections will be used by Meals-On-Wheels to tackle senior hunger in the coming year.
For every $3.23 donated a hungry senior will be fed for a day, Lisi explained.
“With the power of the dollar, you never know,” Lisi said.
Even if you’re going out to watch the big game, call your favorite bar or restaurant and ask if you can put a “Souper Bowl” pot out for donations, Lisi said.

Meals-On-Wheels provides hot, balanced meals to 190 needy, homebound seniors in Rutherford County every day for free. The organization also has 30 seniors who pay for their own daily meals and more than 30 who can’t afford the service on a waiting list, Lisi said.
“People are living longer. The boomers are hitting. People are wanting to stay longer in their homes,” she said, explaining why the service has seen a rise in the number of seniors on the waiting list.
“It doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor, left or right, we’ll help you,” she said.
