One suspect has been charged with attempted second-degree murder for allegedly shooting a 20-year-old Murfreesboro man Saturday near Kroger on Old Fort Parkway.

In addition to attempted second-degree murder, Alexis Lopez-Rodriguez, 20, has been charged with possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance intended for resale, possession of a weapon in the commission of a crime, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Brian Mota, 19, who was in the car with Lopez-Rodriguez at the time of the incident, was charged with possession of a weapon in the commission of a crime, possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance intended for resale, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He has not been charged with attempted second-degree murder.

Police responded just after 11 p.m. to the Kroger at 2449 Old Fort Parkway in response to a shooting. When Officer John Watson of the Murfreesboro Police Department arrived on the scene, he found the victim, Casey Skinner, sitting in a parked vehicle outside of the store, according to the incident report.

Skinner told police he was driving toward Interstate 24 when a man in another vehicle shot him.

“Upon my arrival, I was able to observe a black Chevrolet SUV with what appeared to be three bullet holes in the front passenger window,” Watson reported. “I then made contact with the victim, (who) was sitting in the backseat of the vehicle behind the driver seat and had what appeared to be a gunshot wound to his left arm.”

Skinner told Watson he observed a dark-colored SUV driving beside him. The vehicle then began speeding up and slowing down, as he would change his speed accordingly.

“He then stated the backseat passenger, behind the driver, rolled down the window,” Watson reported. “Then he heard what sounded like two gunshots… His left arm then went numb, and he had blood on his hands.”

The suspects were described as two Hispanic males, who were last seen turning onto I-24 toward Nashville.

The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office was alerted, and deputies soon stopped a blue Ford Explorer, which matched the description given by Skinner, at the Waldron Road exit on I-24. There, Lopez-Rodriguez and Mota, both of whom live in Antioch, were taken into custody and booked into the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center.

The case was then turned back over to MPD detectives for further investigation.

After interviewing the suspects, detectives charged the two men accordingly.

Lopez-Rodriguez was held on a $30,000 bond, and Mota was held on a $10,000 bond.

Both men have since bonded out of jail and are scheduled to appear Nov. 2 in General Sessions Court for a preliminary hearing.
