A Nashville man was arrested Tuesday for the fatal shooting of Smyrna resident Jackie Warpoole early Dec. 15 near the Almaville Road exit of I-24.

Edgar Dominique “Dom” Covington, 23, is charged with first-degree murder, unlawful possession of a weapon in commission of a felony and reckless endangerment, according to the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office. He is being held in the county jail without bond and is scheduled for an Aug. 20 hearing in General Sessions Court.

Authorities said Warpoole died from a gunshot while in his car on the side of the interstate early that morning.

“This was a random, violent encounter,” Sheriff Robert Arnold said in a press conference as he stood by Warpoole’s widow, Angela, and investigating Detectives Jamin Humphress and Steve Craig.

Arnold said he could discuss few details in the six-month-old case because it remains under investigation but said, “As far as we know, (Warpoole and Covington) didn’t know each other at all.”

Covington, whose previous record showed only a marijuana charged in Nashville, was arrested Tuesday at his Nashville home by Rutherford County Sheriff’s detectives, Arnold said.

Information led detectives in several directions during the investigation, but they finally latched onto facts that put them on Covington’s trail, according to Arnold.

The sheriff credited “good investigative tactics and skills” with making the case. “These guys did an outstanding job. This type of crime is very hard to solve,” he said.

Yet he also credited the media for partnering with the sheriff’s office to disseminate information that brought in numerous tips – some good, some bad – about the murder.

Warpoole’s wife, who grew emotional at one point during the press conference, declined to speak to reporters but issued a statement through the sheriff’s office.

“The family of Jackie Warpoole would like to thank Detective Humphress, Detective Craig and the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office for their hard work and dedication. Because of their commitment and countless hours over the last six months, the person responsible for killing Jackie has been arrested.

“The family is forever grateful and continues to pray that the proper justice will be served for Jackie. They would also like to thank their friends and family that have continued to support and pray for them during this tragedy.”

Arnold called it a tragic situation because Covington “took someone’s life” and will have to deal with the legal consequences in addition to the impact he made on the victim’s family.

The sheriff thanked Murfreesboro Police Department, Metro Nashville Police, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, TBI and the state Probation Office for helping with the investigation.
