Police have charged a 22-year-old man in connection with the December 2011 shooting death of Bruce Thomas, who was killed outside of his Lakeshore Drive home in Murfreesboro.
Brandon D. Buchanan, of Baird Lane, was and arrested and charged Thursday with first-degree murder in connection with the case, according to a Murfreesboro Police Department arrest report.
“On Dec. 16, 2011, it was determined through the investigation that Buchanan did intentionally, and with pre-mediation, shoot Thomas, killing him,” Detective Michael Yates reported.
Further information regarding the investigation was not included in the report, and officials have declined to discuss the matter further.
Buchanan is accused of shooting Thomas during an altercation that involved multiple people, all of whom detectives have said are believed to be associated with a gang.
During an interview a few days after the shooting occurred, however, officials with the Police Department said preliminary evidence pointed to another motive.
“Investigators believe the parties involved are affiliated with a gang,” said Sgt. Kyle Evans, public information officer for the Police Department.
“However, they believe the shooting occurred as a result of an argument over a female,” he said during a December 2011 interview.
On the night of the incident, police responded to the scene just before 10 p.m., after receiving calls a man had been shot, according to a Police Department incident report filed by Officer Jay Hawkins.
“Upon my arrival, I observed several black males standing in the street and two black males on the ground … holding Thomas,” Hawkins reported. “Simpson stated, ‘He’s been shot.’”
The two men who were at the scene when police arrived were not injured during the incident, according to the report.
Thomas was transported to Middle Tennessee Medical Center soon after emergency personnel and police responded to the scene. He later died while being treated at the hospital.
