Here are a few ideas for your family from Read to Succeed to make reading this summer a family affair.

Visit the library

There is no age requirement for a library card. Free books and summer reading programs make it a great choice any day. Rutherford County has outstanding libraries with wonderful staff, who will be happy to see you and your children come through the door. The air conditioning is nice too.

Read aloud with kids

Everyday. And have them read to you. Even the older kids. Be silly, serious, sweet. Enjoy it. Read their old favorites. Tell other people, in front of your kids, what fabulous book you read recently. Boast about reading.

Let your kids see you reading

Magazine, newspaper, paperback. Whatever you read, share it. Let your kids see you reading and tell them about it. Ask them about what they are reading. Be interested. Kids need to see that literature is fun, informative and an important part of everyday life. Your life.

Make books a part of your life

What ever your day is like, there is a book to match.

There are lots of good stories for every age, no matter your interests: a picnic, creek swim, dinner-preparation, pajama-day, home-alone-waiting-for-parents-to-get-home-from-work day, even house-cleaning.

Consider how you can make reading a part of your family life. It will be time well worth spent.
