Student walks for love

While most college students are out job searching, beginning new careers or swallowing their pride and moving back in with their parents, one Hamline University graduate from Farmington, Minn., is trying to raise money for victims of the January earthquake in Haiti by walking from Minneapolis, Minn., to Miami, Fla.

Jordan Dibb’s goal is to raise $100,000 while walking 1,800 miles in 100 days. His route has taken him through several major cities throughout the country, including Chicago and Indianapolis, and Thursday, May 13, Dibb’s journey brought him through the streets of Murfreesboro.

The Journey from Minneapolis to Miami began when Dibb was in a bar eating a cheeseburger and a news story about the victims of the Haiti earthquake came on. Dibb decided he wanted to get involved.

When inquiring on how he could go to Haiti to help out he was jokingly told to walk. Dibb started I Walk For Love, teaming up with Action Against Hunger, a nonprofit organization geared toward providing food and clean water to malnourished children and their families, with the goal of raising $100,000.

“Let’s start doing, instead of just thinking about it!” Dibb stated in an official release on the official website for his walk. “This is the one thing that I can actually contribute to the people of Haiti and I've never had such a sense of determination and energy in my life.”

He went on to say that he wanted to do “something that takes heart, effort, blood, sweat and that can't be done alone. While my ambition and motivation are the foundations of this walk, I will not be able to achieve my goal without your support.”

Dibb graduated in May of 2009 with a double major in psychology and sociology.  As of Friday, May 14 he will be half way to his goal of walking into Miami on July 4.

Those interested in making donations can do so at www.iwalkforlove.com or by mailing a check made out to “Action Against Hunger” with the memo line “I Walk For Love” to Action Against Hunger, 247 W. 37th Street, 10th floor, New York, N.Y. 10018.
