This school year Riverdale High School has an early morning coffee shop called The Coffee Chop. Chosen seniors in DECA, an international association of marketing students, run the shop.
The students are required to get to school an hour before classes start, but they are able to count the time as credit towards graduation.
Each student is required to be at school and clocked in by 6:55 a.m.
Once clocked in the students begin their work trying to accomplish such tasks as preparing coffee to sell, making sure the work area is clean, promoting the business and delivering to teachers.
DECA is running the shop in the hope of lowering the costs for those who compete in the organization. DECA is a co-curricular organization that holds state and international conferences.
Items for sale at The Coffee Chop vary but can include different roasts of coffee, four flavors of cappuccino, three flavors of iced coffee, and soon some breakfast food and lattes. School supplies like folders, pens, pencils, notebooks and paper also are available.
Students benefit from obtaining business experience, coffee shop skills and specifics such as learning how to market products in an efficient manner.
When asked about the coffee, Coach Ernest Rivas, a math teacher at Riverdale High School, said “The coffee is excellent.”
Ryan Brown, a Riverdale senior, said “The coffee is so good. I plan on getting it everyday, and it beats Starbucks prices.”
