Although the traditional tax-filing season ended months ago, Mid-Cumberland Community Action Agency is still filing for stimulus payments for qualified individuals until Wednesday, Oct. 15, the filing deadline for the economic stimulus payment.

MCCAA is working with the V.I.T.A program to provide free tax filing services to the residents of Middle Tennessee.

“These stimulus payments have proved to be a life saver for many families across Middle Tennessee, providing some relief when gas and food prices have soared to unbelievable new heights” said Kreda Yokley, executive director for MCCAA.

As of late June 2008, the IRS had identified approximately 5 million low-income seniors, disabled veterans and others with disabilities that had not yet filed for the economic stimulus payment. These are groups that are not traditionally required to file an income tax return.

Qualifying individuals can still claim a stimulus payment of up to $300 per individual, ($600 for married couples), and $300 per child (up to two children per household) by simply filing a 2007 tax return.

“Would you walk past a hundred dollar bill on the ground and not pick it up? What about three one hundred dollar bills?” Yokley asked. “This is essentially what Middle Tennesseans are doing by not filing for the economic stimulus payment.”

To find out if you are eligible to file for the economic stimulus payment, please contact your local MCCAA office at the Bradley Academy, 415 South Academy St., or by phone at 615-893-8938 or 895-3093.

MCCAA also provides a number of self-sufficiency, medical support, rental, mortgage, transportation, and nutritional services to Middle Tennessee families. In addition to Income Tax Preparation, Agency programs include Head Start and Early Head Start and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. The agency services eight midstate counties, which include Cannon, Cheatham, Robertson, Rutherford, Sumner, Trousdale, Williamson and Wilson.
