Stephen Lewis: Making amends for Thanksgiving

Was I serious? The Sunday before Thanksgiving, when the publisher, head honcho, top dog, CEO, and HMFIC, Mike Pirtle himself, wrote a beautiful column about all he is thankful for, and I write a column about boots. He writes a column listing 59 things, one for each year he's been alive, and I write about women's shoe fashions. Are you kidding me? I feel like such a heel (pun intended). Well, at least I can say that even though my column didn't have a lot of heart, it certainly had plenty of sole! Get it? I kill me.

Anyway, I'm going to make up for it this week. And even though it's the Sunday after Thanksgiving I'm going to list some of the things I'm thankful for as well. And hopefully I can be as thought provoking and touching as Mr. Pirtle was. Even though I'll keep mine to the two or three things I'm most thankful for.

The first thing I'm thankful for is Bud Adams. The owner of the Tennessee Titans was "feeling his oats" or vodka a couple weekends ago when he gave the "finger" to Buffalo Bill fans. Although I'm thankful because I'm a Dolphins fan and despise the Bills, that's not the main reason I'm thankful. The main reason I'm thankful is because Bud has made it okay to flip people off again. After Sept. 11, 2001 we all seemed guilty about being mean to each other. That "treat your neighbor as you want to be treated" has finally worn off and we can get back to flying the bird when necessary.

Plus, you have to look at Bud and say if an 86-year-old can give someone the finger then you are obviously never too old to give it. When someone yells "grow up, jerk!" because you flipped him off you can say, "Hey buddy, I'm not 86 yet!" If Bud grew up any more he'd be six feet under wouldn't he? And if a multi-billionaire can flip someone off, it definitely makes it okay for anyone making less than that.

The next thing I'm grateful for is that city of Murfreesboro hasn't let my side of town become ruined like all the other sides of town with commercial rezoning. I'll admit that I do shop at Wal-Mart but I'm more than willing to drive across town to get there. I don't want my side of town destroyed by traffic tie-ups and multiple red lights. Here's a note to anyone with the city of Murfreesboro. If you're wondering why the city school system has had an increasing number of students who qualify for financial assistance it's because many of the city residents who can afford to have moved out of the city and into the county. I predict within the next 20 years the Murfreesboro City School System will mirror larger systems like Davidson County. People are leaving the city limits to get away from having all the traffic congestion and other problems that come with having so much commercial growth in their front yards.

And finally, the last thing I'm thankful for is that meaningless touchdown in the last seconds of the game in that college game that covered the spread and insured a very Merry Christmas at the Lewis house. Not that I would ever gamble away my children's college savings but the Christmas Club account is another story. Without that touchdown Christmas was looking pretty bleak and my wife's birthday wasn't looking too good either.

I hope you're Thanksgiving was as enjoyable as mine. And like me, I hope you have plenty to be thankful for too. Oh, by the way, if you've got any insight on the Cardinals vs. Titans this week give me a call. I'm always looking to upgrade my family's Christmas experience. And what the heck, my kids can go to a junior college if it doesn't work out.
