Stephen Lewis: Ace football prognosticator

Got a call this week from the head honcho. Went something like this: “Lewis, how are you on making predictions?” “Well sir, I’ve never really...” “Perfect. We need an article this week with predictions about the upcoming football season. We need to keep up with the Sports Illustrateds and big newspapers out of Nashville! I’ve already tried to pawn it off on Hammerhaid but he’s writing an investigative piece on mill worm damage out at the Co-Op. And Dr. Kestner has already sent in a column about avoiding frostbite when searching for lost ice cream at the bottom of your deep freezer. I would assign it to Mrs. Murfreesboro but if you didn’t know she’s married to the mayor so she pretty much tells me what she’s going to write about. So it’s all on you.” “Well, thanks sir, but you see, I don’t really watch much foot...” “That’s perfect, get it to me by Friday.”

I realize there are many of you out there who live and die by how your football team does each week. You can always tell when football season starts because church services are less attended and the preacher just instinctively knows to end the sermon a few minutes earlier. So with my apologies, I bring you the Murfreesboro Post’s 2009 football predictions humbly submitted by a person who last watched a football game sometime in the late 1970s.

Well, I suppose if you’re talking pro football you have to start with the two teams who have dominated more than any others. Both the Steelers and Cowboys are always good bets to make it to the Super Bowl. I suspect Coach Tom Landry will have the boys in top shape again this year ready to make another run at a championship. Of course, the Steel Curtain defense of the Steelers will probably have something to say about that. With Terry Bradshaw throwing the ball over the field to receivers like Swann and Stallworth other teams will have trouble just keeping up.

The last I remember the Baltimore Colts were pretty good and the Dolphins just came off an undefeated season so keep your eyes on them too. Some teams that you can probably count out of competing for a championship include the Patriots, the Falcons and the Bengals. These are all perennial losers with no chance. Green Bay is usually pretty bad too, but I seem to remember hearing something about them getting a strong-armed young gun at quarterback not too long ago. His name is Farevy, Farquar, Farvae, or something like that. If he pans out then the Packers might be able to win as many as they lose.

Anyway, I predict the Dolphins will defeat the Redskins in the Super Bowl this year. I suggest you don’t place any bets on my predictions since I base the teams I choose on how cool their helmets look. Not something Vegas looks at when they set a line.

On the college side most people around here are interested in the Volunteers. Up on The Hill I think Coach Majors will once again put together a solid team. He seems to be a solid recruiter as well as a genius with the X’s and O’s. And it helps that he’s universally loved by all Vol fans. The Vols will be challenged by a host of other teams in the SEC such as Vince Dooley’s Georgia Bulldogs, Bear Bryant’s Crimson Tide, and Pat Dye’s Auburn Tigers, some of the best and brightest coaches in the country today.

On the home front I suspect Coach Boots Donnelly will have the Blue Raiders ready for action. The Raiders should make short work of Tech, Austin Peay and TSU. Since Coach Donnelly’s arrival the Raiders have dominated the OVC. And what a great conference with all the teams within a reasonable driving distance of each other. So easy on the fans not to have to drive 400 miles for road games.

So there you have my preview for the 2009 football season. Who knows, this column may inspire me to follow the sport more closely. Come to think of it, I haven’t heard anything about the Houston Oilers in a long time. Hmmmm?
