Children from kindergarten through 12th grade were scheduled to participate in Safety Week in Rutherford County Schools this week with the School Resource Officers program.
The drills rehearse children on how to respond in case of an emergency such as a school shooting, said sheriff’s Maj. Bill Kennedy of the SRO Division.
For example, teachers and students are encouraged to consider what could happen and to explore their options.
The first priority is to hide from an aggressor.
“If deemed necessary, run for cover or flight,” Kennedy said. “If it’s the worst, we advise teachers and kids the option to fight back.”
A teacher in Littleton, Colo., tackled a gunman and stopped the attack. SROs show videos to demonstrate the teachers and students have options.
At Blackman Middle School, assistant Deborah Farley reported students cleared the hallway within 21 seconds.
SROs sponsor the safety training in both the spring and fall semesters to keep the message clear for students.
Schools’ Director Harry Gill works with the SROs to promote safety in the schools and classrooms.
“Mr. Gill is a fantastic partner in keeping schools as safe as possible for kids,” Kennedy said.
