The Blue Cross Spring Fling kicked off its week of TSSAA spring sport championships Monday, May 24, with track and field competition, including the women’s pentathlon.
Riverdale’s Jessica Azor competed in pentathlon but failed to make it into the top eight and earn a spot on the podium.
Azor got off to a slow start, placing last in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 17.55 seconds. She continued to struggle in the long jump, once again finishing last.
Despite a slow start, Azor was able to battle back into the competition against the best decathletes in the state.
She finished fifth in the high jump, and followed up with a first place finish in the shot put. Through four events Azor had managed to climb from 12th place overall up to seventh.
The last event was the 800 meter run. Azor struggled to keep pace with the rest of the field, finishing 11th place in the run after Memphis Central’s Alaina Yancey pulled up with an injury and was unable to finish the race.
Azor finished the 800 meter run with a time of 3:14.42, about 47 seconds off of the runner who finished first.
Janetra Gleaves of Cane Ridge finished first, accumulating 3,430 points through all of the events. She was followed by White Station’s Kyla Walker with 3,417 and Knoxville West’s Maddie Treasure with 3,311. Azor finished 11th place out of 12 competitors with a total of 2,046 points. |
