Riverdale relays to state title

Coming into tonight’s girls running finals at the 2011 BlueCross Spring Fling the Riverdale 4x 200 relay was looking to improve from a fifth-place finish in the same event last year. They needed a perfect race and they got it. The foursome of Olivia Jones, Ashley Henry, Ashley Haymond and Joy Frierson used what head coach Rickey Field called “perfect handoffs” to take the state title.

Lady Warrior senior Henry said she had been working for this moment since she was a freshman. “It meant so such to me,” she said. “I have been trying for so long.” Henry also finished sixth in the 100-meter dash.

Her teammate Jones was a loss for words just saying she was “happy to win.” The freshman Frierson, who also finished runner-up in the 100, earlier in the night added this was the best feeling she has had all season. Haymond, who ran the third leg, said she just wanted to get the baton to Frierson in the best position possible.

The Riverdale 4x 100 relay team finished third, and senior Jessica Azor completed her long day with a 8th in the 100-meter hurdles. Fellow Lady Warrior senior Tia Carney was sixth in the 300-meter hurdles.

Oakland came real close to taking home a state title in the 400 meter dash, when senior Emily Davis used a late race comeback in the final few meters to finish in the runner-up spot. Davis used everything she had left in her final high school race. She had to be carted off after she received her medal.

“It means everything to me,” the future Belmont athlete student said. “I wanted to leave everything out there in my final race as a high school student.”

Other Oakland finishers included sophomore Shelby Coleman finishing fifth in the 800 meter run and 6th in the 4x100 meter relay.

Finally, Siegel junior Laura Bean followed her eighth in the 3200 meter run yesterday with a ninth in the 1600 meter run tonight. She was excited to run in front of the home crowd.

“I had a lot of support what more can you ask for,” Bean said.

The boys had their running prelims earlier this afternoon and their finals is Friday at 5 p.m. The 3200-meter run is at 9 a.m. and the field finals are at 11 a.m. Friday morning.

There was one boys’ final earlier this afternoon, when Siegel junior Tony Allen finishing 13th in the pole vault.

Also in Class AAA tennis action, Siegel sophomore Ashlee Boles beat Cleveland senior Catherine Jordan in the quarters. However, she was defeated in the semis by Centennial senior Kaylene Chadwell.

In the Class AAA girls doubles, the Siegel duo of junior Alison Todd and sophomore Jacquelyn Leeman knocked off Cordova’s Taylor Gassett and Briana Augustus in the quarters. However, they were defeated in the semifinals by the Brentwood duo of Iris Hao and Lauren Caballero.

The Oakland duo of juniors Connor Shea and James Myers fell in the quarterfinals to McMinn County’s Fenil Patel and Michael Barlock. They were the last remaining Rutherford County players in the tennis tournament.
