Spring Fling begins with track & field

The 2011 BlueCross Spring Fling began Monday at MTSU’s Dean Hayes Track and Soccer Complex with the Girls Pentathlon. Three Rutherford County representatives took part in the event.

The Riverdale duo of seniors Jessica Azor and LaTia Carney had an overall finish of 6th and 11th in the five-event contest in the Class AAA division. Azor’s best finish was first place in the shot put with a best throw of 10.81 meters. She will compete in the event on Thursday.

Carney’s best finish was also in the same event by placing 5th.

Later this week, Azor will also compete in the 100-meter hurdles and the high jump, while Carney goes for a state title in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles.

Eagleville junior Becca Browning was 11th in the Class A-AA pentathlon, including a first-place tie in the high jump with East Literature’s Kanellar Carney. Browning will compete in the same event on Thursday.

The single events for the girls in all classes start on Wednesday with the finals on Thursday. While the boys events are Thursday and all of the finals will be Friday.
