Old Hollywood Glam – that’s the style for this season’s fashion.

Designers have pulled much of their inspiration from the 1970s, bringing back platforms, flowy dresses and red lips, for a very feminine, romantic look.

“We’re going to be seeing a lot of dresses again this year … lots of lace items and lots of ruffles and lots of embroidery work,” said Judy Goldie, owner of Trendy Pieces and Bella’s Boutique.

Obviously spring fashion just wouldn’t be spring fashion without florals, but designers are also neutral palates with a pop of eye-catching color.

“We’ve seen a lot of white on white with a nude or grey accent of some sort and then some color,” said Ivelisse Martin, co-owner of Anastasia’s Boutique.

She added that blues are really popular this year, especially navy blue to carry off a marine look.

Better yet, you’re sure to find a trendy style to fit your shape.

“That’s what we’re loving this year,” Goldie continued. “We’re able to buy for all body types, and we feel like there’s not going to be anybody who won’t be able to come in and find something at one of our stores.”

Couple any outfit with flashy earrings,  big cuffs or long necklaces, and the look is almost complete.

Shoes

Heavy, strappy gladiator heels and peep-toe boots were all the rage last year, but it’s a little different this time around. Designers have replaced harsh leather and sky-high heels with cork and platform heels.

“It’s still around, but this year, it’s more about wedges, like the 70s-type shoe,” Martin explained. “I think they’ve taken the really strappy look that the gladiator-type shoes had and added a wedge or platform.”

Goldie added that Mary Janes are popular again, but this time with a peep toe and heel, along with sandals with jewels and sparkle.

Hair & Make-up

Gone are the picture-perfect highlights and sleek, perfect hairstyles.

“It’s more natural now – lots of longer layers – and there are three variations of the shag in different lengths with lots of layering to create those ‘lady looks,’” said Top of the Block stylist and manager, Diane Jobman.

“New colors coming out have lots of gold tones – even brunettes are having more of gold tones, whereas before, everybody wanted all the gold out of their hair. Now, (stylists) will strategically place foils in places to create a soft contrast in your tones, but it’s very soft and subtle and more natural. Even up-dos are pulled to the side with soft waves.”

Also becoming very popular are brightly colored feather extensions that are fused into hair just like regular hair extensions. They add a fun burst of color to any hairstyle – straight or curly.

By keeping hair and make-up rather natural and sun-kissed, ladies can focus color on their lips. Jobman said variations of red lipstick really bring out the old Hollywood look.

“Where we were seeing nude, muted lips, now it’s all about the sexy red tones,” she said, pointing out that pearly white teeth and skin tone both play a factor in the shade of red that should be used.
