The aging pools at SportsCom are getting “rejuvenated,” Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation Director Lanny Goodwin said.

Goodwin presented a proposal to the Murfreesboro City Council Thursday night to refurbish both the indoor and outdoor pools at the recreation facility that was built in 1987.

“It’s a rejuvenation of the over 20-year-old facility,” Goodwin said, adding the project will make the pools more appealing to all ages.

The $2.9 million project will start in February with the outdoor pool, which will reopen on Memorial Day without any weather delays. The indoor pool will then close to be resurfaced and get a new filtration system.

When finished, the outdoor pool will have a “water-park setting,” complete with a “sprayground,” water slides and climbing wall,” Goodwin said.

Older patrons will also enjoy an open lap pool, he added.

“This is for people more my age,” he joked.

Other council business:
• Council approved resurfacing 2.1 miles of the road from Northwest Broad Street to Old Fort Parkway. The project will also add 4-foot bike lanes to each side of the road and connect existing sidewalks with new.

The project will cost the city $39,210 to be reimbursed by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

• Scheduled public hearings for and an annexation study for an area located north of Wilkinson Pike and west of West Park Drive and a zoning request for approximately .25 acres to be rezoned from multi-family residential to commercial district along Greenland Drive and Old Lascassas Road. The public hearings will be held Nov. 19.

• Approved recommendations of the Assistant Water & Sewer Director for the acquisition of easements for the Wilkinson Pike Sanitary Sewer, Southwest Regional Force Main and Lower Lytle Creek Sanitary Sewer projects.

• Deferred voting for property acquisition for Haynes Drive improvements until public meetings can be held with residents to discuss the project and air concerns. The city plans to slightly straighten the S-curve on Haynes Drive between Sulphur Springs Road and Regency Park Drive.

• Approved appraisals and property acquisition for Joe B. Jackson Parkway extension.

• Approved construction testing service for the new Chamber of Commerce/Visitors Center on Medical Center Parkway.
