Despite a career game by junior wing Antonio Green, MTSU’s men didn’t have quite enough firepower in a 98-93 road loss to Marshall last Saturday.

Green poured in a career-high 31 points and made seven 3-pointer in the setback, which dropped MTSU to 8-19 overall land 5-9 in Conference USA play. Marshall improved to 14-13 and 7-7.

Junior forward Reggie Scurry also had a career night with 24 points, and he also pulled down nine rebounds. Donovan Sims added 12 points and Karl Gamble 11.

The game was tied six times and had nine league changes, but a key run by Marshall in the second half enabled the Thundering Herd to hold off the Blue Raiders.

“With their style of play you’re going to see quick runs like that a lot,” MTSU coach Nick McDevitt said. “They can score in a hurry because they’re going to get quick shots up every time. But because of the pace they play at you can also get back in it quickly as well.”

MTSU dominated Marshall on boards, outrebounding the Thundering Herd by a whopping 51-25 count.

“We did a lot of really good stuff today,” McDevitt said. “You can’t outrebound a team like we did without great effort.

“We shot the ball really well from the free throw line and from all over the floor really, but they got us in a little foul trouble early. That forced us to play some different combinations of guys that we don’t see a lot. I thought Lawrence Mosley gave us some huge minutes and plays in wake of the foul trouble.”

Mashall had six players in double figures, led by C.J. Burks’ 20.

Earlier in the week, the Blue Raiders dropped another tough C-USA game, falling on the road to Western Kentucky 61-53.

Sims (18), Scurry (16) and Green (14) combined for 48 points,, and the Blue Raiders also won the rebounding battle 46-30.

“I thought we played really well and really hard for most of the night tonight,” McDevitt stated. “For about 36 or 37 minutes we were really good.”

MTSU led 32-28 at halftime, but WKU had a key 13-0 run during a three-minute stretch that proved to be the difference.

“We were a little sloppy to start the second half and it cost us,” McDevitt added. “They beat us by about 12 in a three-minute stretch there and we ended up losing by eight. When you’re playing a team that talented on the road every minute and every possession matters.”
