This year in sports has touched a wide range of emotions and also changed the way we look at certain people in power.
I am hopefully that in 2012, we will go back to talking about the action on the field instead of the sidelines.
With the holiday season on our doorstep, it’s time to make wishes for the upcoming year.
So here are my Top 10, (11, because I’m a sports fanatic) wishes, including some sent in by our Facebook readers. The list is in no particular order.
1. One of our Facebook readers, Don Wright, sent us a wish for the MTSU men’s basketball team to end the long NCAA tournament drought and earn a spot in the bracket for the first time since 1989. So far, so good for the Blue Raiders, who hold a 10-2 record as of Saturday. Hopefully, they can keep it up when the Sun Belt conference play starts at the end of the month.
2. Don’t forget about the ladies -- Clayton Eli Rodgers wants an Elite Eight or Final Four for Rick Insell’s team. As of Sunday, the Lady Raiders are only 7-5. However, they have played, as usual, some tough competition. Just like the men, league play is around the corner. They are not out of a contention for another SBC title and a trip to the “Big Dance.”
3. Rodgers also said he wants to see the SEC win its seventh BCS title in a row in 2012. He would also like to see Alabama win another national championships. Of course on Jan. 9, the SEC will make it six in a row, when the Crimson Tide faces conference foe LSU for the 2011 BCS Championship.
4. 2011 was a season to forget for MTSU’s football team. However, they will be back, and we hope for a Sun Belt title and another bowl game for Head coach Rick Stockstill’s team next year.
5. Around the midstate, Rutherford County has been know for the competitiveness of its high school sports, especially in football, because of the balance of talent between the local schools. Here’s to another year of exciting action in all sports between the county’s best. Also, we want more state champions from the area!
6. The 2011 NFL season will end on New Year’s Day, and the Titans were in a great position to make the playoffs until Sunday’s disappointing loss at winless Indianapolis. Facebook fan Mandy Burns wishes for Tennessee to make and win the Super Bowl. As for myself, I hope for the Patriots to win a fourth Lombardi trophy.
7. Of course, on the diamond, you know about the Chicago Cubs 103-year World Series drought. A Cubs fan on our Facebook page, Selena Price Burlison, wishes for that streak to finally end in 2012.
8. Last season, the Nashville Predators had its best season ever that included advancing to the second round of the NHL Playoffs for the first time in the team’s history. We hope for a better 2012, and we also hope that the team can keep one of the league’s best defensive tandems, Ryan Suter and Shea Weber in the Music City for a long time to come.
9. After a lengthy NBA lockout, the 2011-12 season will finally begin on Christmas. A couple of players have become celebrities off the court for being tied to a certain reality television family, the Kardashians. My wish is for that family to disappear off the airwaves -- forever. As for the league itself, my wish is for the players and owners to put the lockout behind them and continue bringing the NBA popularity back to the level it enjoyed during the Michael Jordan era.
10. The 2012 Summer Olympics will start in late July in London. If you’re like most of us, you cannot wait to see if USA athletes like Michael Phelps continue to rewrite records during the swimming events. I am also looking forward to seeing who will be the new stars of the Olympics. My wish is for the United States to have another tremendous performance in the event.
11. Finally, I want to thank all of you for reading each issue and wish for an exciting year on all the county’s sports fields in 2012.
Cheers to a safe holiday season and a great 2012. |
