Soft drinks, water needed for National Night Out

Murfreesboro will celebrate is 25th National Night Out against crime Aug. 5 at Barfield-Crescent Park, Franklin Heights, Patterson Park Community Center, Rogers Park, SportsCom and Spring Valley apartments.

“National Night Out is designed to encourage the citizens to partnership with local law enforcement officers to reduce crime in their neighborhoods,” Maj. Clyde Adkison reported in a press release. “The night will target crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support and participation in all anti-crime efforts and strengthen the cooperation between police and citizens. The event sends out a loud and clear message to the criminals and drug dealers they are not welcome in the city of Murfreesboro.”

Primary sponsors are Murfreesboro Fire and Police departments, Murfreesboro Housing Authority, Rutherford County Emergency Medical Services and the Tennessee National Guard.

Citizens are asked to turn out outside lights, lock their doors and come outside to spend the evening with neighbors and law enforcement officers.

“Meet some new friends and fight crime and drugs together,” Adkison reported.

Sponsors are asking businesses and citizens to donate soft drinks and water. People who can donate the drinks are asked to call Police Lt. Steve Teeters, Sgt. Melvin Cunningham or Officer Kyle Evans at 895-3874 or Donald Smith at Murfreesboro Housing Authority at 893-9414, extension 19.

Events at each location include:

• Barfield-Crescent Park: Ropes course, helicopter, movies, T-shirt walk, bike medic, Youth Can, Marines.

• Franklin Heights: Band, bingo, jumpy blowup, bookmobile, Read to Succeed, Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

• Patterson Park: Climbing wall, carnival games, gospel music, fingerprinting, bike medic.

• Rogers Park: Petting zoo, moon walk, raffle baskets, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, blood pressure checks.

• SportsCom: Helicopter, humvee, free swim, music, bike medic, health department booth, inflatable games.

• Spring Valley: Cake walk, gold fish toss, pie eating contest, Read to Succeed, balsa airplanes.
