It’s been one cold and snowy winter.
Middle Tennessee has been blasted with one snowstorm after another forcing school closings and leaving students out of the classroom. State law requires students spend at least 180 days in the classroom.
So far Rutherford County Schools has had to call classes six days this winter, but it stockpiles snow days by adding an additional 30 minutes to each school day, RCS Spokesman James Evans said.
The extra minutes add up to 13 days, 11 of which are designated as snow days and two are used for teacher training. So the system still has five days left to use in case of more snow.
Murfreesboro City Schools is in the same boat with five snow days left in its stockpile, MCS Spokeswoman Cheryl Harris said.
But not all school systems are so lucky. Metro-Nashville Public Schools only set aside five days and has closed schools seven days so far this year, meaning Nashville students will have to make up two days, so far.
