Snow causing multiple traffic mishaps

Snow-slick roads resulted in multiple traffic crashes throughout Murfreesboro and Rutherford County.

Murfreesboro Police investigated more than 65 snow-relate crashes this morning since the snow began falling, said spokesman Kyle Evans. One crash involved a Jeep that rolled over near Warrior Drive and state Route 99 (New Salem Highway).

“We have had several wrecks since the snow began so if it’s not necessary to be out, stay at home,” Evans recommended.

“The road conditions have deteriorated to a dangerous point although our road crews have done an excellent job at trying to keep up with the storm,” Evans said. “It just continues to escalate and it’s very important that people exercise extra caution in route to their residence.

“We have worked approximately 50 accidents and that number continues to increase, many of which are injury accidents,” the spokesman said.

“We would ask people who are involved in an accident, if there are no serious injuries, to move to a safe location off the roadway such as a parking lot or driveway. If the damage is minor, they should exchange information and proceed to their destination.

“If there’s major damage and the vehicles are still movable, please move out of the roadway so a second collision does not occur,” Evans said, adding people are sliding into cars already involved in a crash.

It appears part of Interstate 24 is shut down because of the snow so drivers should find alternate routes.

Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers were investigating pileups on Interstate 24 between South Church Street and Joe B. Jackson Highway.

Because of the number of calls, a sheriff’s dispatcher couldn’t estimate the number of crashes reported.

Murfreesboro City spokesman Chris Shofner said City Manager Rob Lyons was monitoring the snow and closed city offices early at 2 p.m.

City street crews were out all night salting roads.

“It’s passable but pretty slick,” said Shofner who was driving on South Church Street. “It’s slow going. Just take it easy and put a lot of distance between you and the car in front of you.”
