A 16-year-old driver died Sunday after crashing a vehicle Saturday night on Rock Springs Road, the Smyrna Police spokesman said.

Driver James Stockton of Smyrna was pinned inside the wreckage after his vehicle left the road and struck a tree, said Sgt. Bobby Gibson. His 13-year-old brother climbed out and notified their father.

A neighbor heard the crash and called Smyrna Police. Emergency workers freed Stockton from the crash, the sergeant said. LifeFlight helicopter flew him to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. Paramedics transported the younger brother in an ambulance to Vanderbilt where he was treated and released Sunday. The driver died Sunday.

Cause of the crash is under investigation by Smyrna Police.

He was the 29th traffic fatality this year in Rutherford County.
