Three people were reportedly on board a small airplane that crashed around 1:50 Friday afternoon on the athletic field behind Life Point Church on Legacy Drive, just off Almaville Road, in Smyrna.

The Cessna 310 aircraft had taken-off earlier in the day from Hawkins Field in Jackson, Miss. and was going to the Benton County Airport in Camden, Tenn., WGNS reported.

“The plane’s engine sputtered and then it went straight into the ground,” witness Marty Luffman told WGNS.

The plane had just made a stop at the Smyrna Airport and traveled about 3-miles before crashing.

Firefighters, Smyrna Police and representatives from the Federal Aviation Administration responded to the scene to find next to nothing left of the plane.

The Federal Aviation Administration said that three persons were reportedly on board, but the aircraft was so demolished that it was impossible to confirm how many persons were inside.

The twin-prop aircraft is owned by Hudson Management Corporation of Oxford, Miss.  The National Traffic Safety Board will take over the investigation Saturday.

A Cessna 310 is a twin engine aircraft with a range of 1,000 miles. It has an excellent safety record. The witness states "the engine" sputtered. Since this aircraft can fly on a feathered engine, the failure must have been in both engines.
