More than a year in the making, the new Smyrna Outdoor Adventure Center held its grand opening and ribbon cutting May 4 and is ready for business.

Civic leaders, town staff and families with children of all ages came Thursday, eager to see what's been developing inside the Smyrna Event Center, next door to banquet facilities and Parks and Recreation offices, in the space once occupied by a racquet ball court and fitness equipment.

The Outdoor Adventure Center offers a hall with interactive exhibits, a gallery featuring the work of local artists as well as photography, history and culture, a lecture hall for guest speaker presentations and events, and very impressively, an Adventure Zone with rock climbing walls and other climbing structures for kids and adults of varying skill levels. The Discovery Den is set up for programs, crafts, games and stories, and party rooms are available to rent for birthday celebrations, pool parties and other special occasions.

The facility is also Splash Town's front door. Where Smyrna's simple swimming pool once stood, there are now a series of structures, slides and splash pads suitable for sliding, splashing, spraying, swimming, dunking and generally reveling in the water, perfect for hot and muggy days ahead.

Smyrna has developed a reputation for being a great place to retire and a great place to raise kids, with plenty of outdoor activities at the town's extensive Parks and Recreation facilities. The new Outdoor Adventure Center complements existing parks, walking trails, baseball diamonds and other recreational offerings in the town.
