Sleeping children safely rescued from burning home

TMP Reports

Several sleeping children were rescued from a fire that destroyed a $250,000 rented log home early Sunday on Morten Lane, a sheriff’s deputy reported.

Renter Matthew Morgan wasn’t home but friend Donald Murray, some adults and several children were at the home when the fire alarm sounded, Deputy Matt Clagg reported.

Murray found the walls on fire at the second floor and heavy smoke. The adults rescued the children. “Upon arrival, I observed the top one-half of the home fully engulfed in flames,” Clagg reported.

Salem-Blackman and Almaville volunteer firefighters responded to battle the blaze.

Morgan believes the fire might have started near the chimney, which had been burning for several days, the deputy reported.

He estimated the value of the contents at $95,000. The home was insured. Daniel Bergstran of Nashville owned the home. Detective Randy Groce is investigating the cause of the fire.
