'Skydive' stickers costing $5,000 in damage | Skydive, felony vandalism

More than 100 bumper stickers were placed on city signs, costing more than $5,000 to clear or replace signs.
More than 100 “Skydive” bumper stickers were placed on Murfreesboro city street signs, causing more than $5,000 worth of vandalism, police reported. Street employees must remove the bumper stickers, some of which can’t be removed so the sign must be replaced, Officer Pam Crabtree reported. The vandalism costs taxpayers in manpower replacing and cleaning the signs. Murfreesboro Police spokesman Kyle Evans said Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of suspects involved in the felony vandalism. People who have information about the vandals may call Crime Stoppers at 893-STOP between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Duh! Call the 1-800 number.

By: soon2b6 on 12/10/09
What does the Skydive company have to say about this?

By: larrylee on 12/10/09
i will scrape them for 2000$. what a joke

By: bp615 on 12/10/09
It would take three hundred stickers to equal over 16 bucks per sticker to remove....and it cost the city MORE than 5000 dollars to remove these?

I would have contracted to do it for 3500 maybe less.

Maybe the city should have found out who did this BEFORE they removed them. Or even the DUI offenders could have worked on it.

Whats really funny is that it took more than a 100 stickers for someone to say "Hey, there sure are a lot of skydive stickers on these signs, we better find out who did this."

I know you cut people some slack but I think I would have called the number after seeing about the 5th maybe 9th one.

Go fig.

By: avaughn7 on 12/10/09
I would have cleaned them for $1000 Hell maybe less!

By: bp615 on 12/10/09
Oh yeah, and the city is adding to the fire by giving these guys free advertising.

Way to go.

By: bp615 on 12/10/09
Avaughn7, I think the same thing but you gotta start high...shoot if they are gonna waste money they might as well give it to someone who needs it.

By: HuskyLover on 12/10/09
Gee, who's actually shocked that the government would actually pay someone $50 to scrape a single bumper sticker off a stop sign? Your tax dollars at work, folks.

Heck, I need extra Christmas cash. I'll charge $5 per stop sign and call it a deal!

Davidson County has already acted on this type of vandalism. If this was in some parts of the world it might cost someone a hand or at least a finger. The culprits ought to have to pay for the damage they caused and maybe for damage where the culprits haven't been found.

It may seem funny, but the implications of this kind of stupid "fun" is that it is OK to destroy or deface property, because "I won't get caught", and "Someone else will pay for it."

To all of you who need the extra money and are willing to do the cleanup for less than the city: Do you have the required licenses, insurance, etc. to contract with the city? That may not be so bad. But, do you have the good-ol-boy connections to get the job???????

Save the taxpayer money. Don't bother to clean them up.

By: momx5 on 12/11/09
I like the idea of the DUI community service hours, but community service/road cleanup is not free. The offender pays a fee to "participate". I guess with that arrangement the city could have made money instead of spending this outrageous sum.

Wait until it warms up and they will peel right off.

By: SocEtTuem on 12/11/09
I'll start a bidding war with Huskylover and do it for $4.50 each. If you don't want to wait like Farmall suggests, then a little heat gun and viola, off they come! Duh, has anyone thought to do a reverse lookup on the 1-800 number?

By: Bluesman on 12/11/09
I wonder what it cost for the county to go out and remove campaign signs after elections.

By: momx5 on 12/11/09
i like you, bluesman

This is another of the unethical advertising tactics commonly used by a Georgia based company called 1 800 Skyride, also know as “Thrill Planet”, “Adventure Skydiving”, “Luxergy.com” and a wide variety of other business names. They also run thousands of misleading websites all over the country and advertise to offer everything from Skydiving to Scuba Diving for Great White Sharks in every city in America including Nashville. The way their scam works is that when an unsuspecting customer sees one of the sticker or websites, they call the number and the sales rep quickly gets their credit card info, and the customer is not told that they will have to travel to Cedartown, Georgia to receive the services they paid for. This company has made an effort to set up an operation in Clarksville, but after the city realized what kind of company this is, and the city officials found discrepancies in they way they were operating and the way they had use multiple business names to advertise, operate and pay their bills, the city decided to ask the skydiving company to leave. they then moved to the Waverly/Humphreys Co. Airport to continue their bad business practices. For more information about this company, you can go to 1800skyrideripoff.com or you can simply do a Google search for the words “1 800 Skyride Scam” and see for yourself.

If anyone has any questions, we are the owners of the Consumer Alert 1800Skyrideripoff.com and we will be happy to assist anyone who has been scammed by this company. And even thought they make it very difficult to get a refund, it has been done and can be done again.

Buyer beware!

By: commonsenseisdead on 12/13/09
The reason for the high cost of removing the stickers is pretty much what shotgun posted above. Permits have to be in place, approval by the appropriate city agencies and boards, having to be licensensed, bonded, and insured, all of that fun stuff. To cover the costs of the insurance the company then has to charge higher rates for services. Why does this happen? Because we as a people are so eager to sue anyone that offends, threatens, or puts us at an inconvience that businesses and government agencies (the easiest target) have to cover themselves in a cloak of protection because if the city did hire someone to pull the stickers and that person scratched or dented a sign, someone would surely sure the city for the resulting car crash, pain and mental suffering, and medical bills to the tune of several thousands of dollars. In essence five grand of overtime pay is cheap insurance for the city in the long run. However, I agree there should be a cheaper alternative.
