Six dogs perished in a fire despite efforts from the homeowner who tried to save the pets about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday off Armstrong Valley Road, a sheriff’s deputy reported.
Owner Robert Miller of Panther Creek Road came home to find smoke and flames coming from the back of his house, Deputy Chris Webb reported. He broke out a window to the master bedroom in an attempt to save the dogs.
“The heat and smoke was too overwhelming to rescue the dogs and he was unsuccessful in doing so,” Webb reported.
Firefighters from Christiana and Rutherford volunteer fire departments responded to extinguish the blaze.
“The residence was completely engulfed” in flames when Webb arrived.
Miller estimated damage at $250,000. An extra patrol was placed on the house to keep people from stealing his property.
