The Tennessee state championship for tennis began at 9 a.m. Thursday, May 27, at Old Fort Park, and featured doubles teams in boy’s and girl’s tennis from Siegel High School.

Siegel’s Peter Elbaum and Brad Leeman faced off against Ryota Yoshida and Yuesuke Yodone from Maryville.

After beginning the first set by winning the first game, Elbaum and Leeman struggled to break the serve of Yoshida and Yodone, losing in straight sets.

The Siegel girls were eliminated as well, but in a closely fought match that went down to the wire.

Caroline Elbaum and Jacquelyn Leeman of Siegel lost first set before fighting back, forcing and third and final set to decide the winner.

Elbaum and Leeman were able to break serve, taking the first game. Anna Fuhrman and Louise Powers of Rossview responded by winning the next two and regaining control of the match.

Siegel and Rossview split the next four games with each pair winning their serve, leaving Rossview in the lead 4-3. Siegel had the serve in the eighth game, but Rossview managed to break, stretching their advantage to 5-3.

Responding to the challenge, Elbaum and Leeman managed to take the ninth game, pushing the match to a tenth with the serve going into the game.

Rossview’s girls took advantage of a double fault by Siegel and won the game and the match.

Both Peter and Caroline Elbaum are seniors at Siegel, playing their last tennis for the high school. Brad, sophomore, and Jacquelyn Leeman, freshman, will have a chance to take another run at a state championship next year.
