On a night in which the weather was more fitting for a late October football game than a mid-May baseball game, both high school baseball teams left in Murfreesboro had their season ended in 1-0 losses Tuesday night during the Region 4-AAA tournament.

Siegel lost at home in 10 innings to Tullahoma, while Riverdale traveled to Columbia and also completed their final game of the year.

The Stars and the Wildcats had terrific pitching performances by each of their starters, Austin Coley and David Hess. Coley pitched a scoreless nine innings for the Stars, while Hess also pitched a blank mark for Tullahoma.

However, in the top of the 10th, Jordan Sheffield doubled off the left field wall for the Wildcats. Then, after Siegel relief pitcher Brennan Pearson struck out Justus Sheffield for the second out, Tullahoma catcher James Plaisted singled up the middle to bring home Jordan Sheffield for the only run of the game.  The Wildcats finished up the Stars season with a three up, three down in the bottom of the 10th that included pitch hitter Zach Ginn striking out to end the game.

“We had a great year, and we were so close,” Coley said after the game. “Tonight was not our night.”

Coley pitched a gem for the Stars in which he threw 136 pitches, including 85 strikes and 13 strikeouts.

“He threw great, but we did not score a run for him,” Siegel head coach Craig Reavis said of his pitcher’s performance.

As for the quiet Stars bats, they had the bases loaded for several occasions, but could not push a run across.

“We had chances all night, but we couldn’t get a big hit,” Reavis said.

In the final couple of innings, Siegel had the bases loaded twice including in the bottom of the eighth, when Pearson singled and then stole second. David Kosinski walked and Ben Elder singled off the pitcher’s glove that filled the bases. However, Ginn went down on strikes to end the threat.

In the following inning, Ben Holland walked, but Will Cooper came in as a courtesy runner. Sam Lewis drilled a ball to center, but the Tullahoma center fielder missed it and Cooper advanced to third. Pearson then walked to fill the bases once again. However, Matt Wilson struck out and then thrown out of the game for throwing his helmet after the at-bat.

It was Siegel’s second consecutive loss in the Region tournament to the Wildcats. Last year, the Stars fell 2-1.

“It’s rough,” Coley said. “I think we are better than those guys, but we did not show it.”

With the Riverdale and Siegel losses, Rutherford County will not have a team in the Class AAA Blue Cross Spring Fling next week here in Murfreesboro.
