| The Siegel boys (32-2) jumped to an early lead over Lawrence County (23-10), but saw that lead nearly disappear as the final game of the Division 4AAA Region Tournament clock wound down Thursday night.
Then the Stars went on a run that lasted virtually the rest of the game and finally won 70-52 to advance to a Sectional (Substate) game at 7 p.m. Monday at Siegel versus Cleveland.
If Siegel wins Monday, the Stars will advance to Boys State at Murphy Center for the fifth time and will play their first game Thursday, March 17.
Versus Lawrence County, Siegel was holding on to a slim three-point lead after one quarter but stretched the lead to nine at half.
Siegel won every quarter in this one and the second quarter surge was fueled by six points from Treyton Harris and seven from Cedrick Williams. Harris tossed in seven more in the third quarter and Siegel won going away.
When you think Siegel Stars you usually don’t think defense first, but the Stars held Lawrence County to 18 second half points. That’s impressive.
Stats tell a little of the story as Lawrence County was an awful eight of 22 from the line (36 percent) and Siegel won the battle of 3s as Lawrence County had five and Siegel seven, with three of them coming from Siegel sharpshooter Kyle Adams and two from Harris, who had an excellent tournament.
Siegel has an excellent chance of reaching the TSSAA State Tournament. Their opponent Monday, the Cleveland Blue Raiders, are 19-9 and lost 68-59 in the Region Championship game to McMinn County. Lawrence County will play at McMinn Monday.
