Shrek to take center stage

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- The Murfreesboro Center for the Arts will stage the popular “Shrek the Musical” beginning Friday, Jan. 10, 2014.

The show is slated to run through Sunday, Jan. 26.

Based on the 2001 DreamWorks film “Shrek” and William Steig’s 1990 book of the same name, “Shrek the Musical” features such familiar characters as the ogre Shrek, Princess Fiona, Donkey, Dragon, Lord Farquaad and Pinocchio, among others.

The popular musical ran for more than a year on Broadway until January 2010, and it has been on national tour several times. The most recent tour ended in April.

In Murfreesboro, performers will range in ages from 8 and 18 years old, and they will be directed by Matthew Hayes Hunter, Emily Dennis and Hayley Orozco.  

The shows begin at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and at 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays at the Center for the Arts, located at 110 W. College St. Ticket prices are between $11 and $15, while the luncheon cost is $8.

There also will be a luncheon and interaction with “Shrek the Musical” characters at 12:30 p.m. before each Saturday matinee.
