The start of a new school year means some new and returning students are facing a necessary evil – immunization shots.
But Middle Tennessee Medical Center's Mobile Health Unit will be on hand in the next week at several middle schools throughout the county to make vaccinations as quick, inexpensive and painless as possible for students and their parents.
The Mobile Health Unit has partnered with Murfreesboro's Primary Care And Hope Clinic to offer physicals and immunizations to any child enrolling in Rutherford County or Murfreesboro City schools.
"Our goal is to work with the health department and school system to make sure students are healthy, properly immunized, and ready to learn," Mobile Health Unit Director Kathy Ferrell said.
Enrolling kindergarteners must be vaccinated against Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis (Whooping Cough), Hepatitis B, Polio, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (Chicken Pox), and Hepatitis A.
Enrolling seventh graders must receive an additional Tetanus/Diptheria/Pertussis booster if they have not been given one in the past five years, and must produce proof of their vaccination against Chicken Pox.
Those students deemed "homeless" who have not obtained any required immunizations will be referred to their school's homeless liaison for assistance in obtaining their immunization record.
Additionally, students 18 and younger can receive free dental cleanings and checkups, including fluoride treatments, at certain schools due to a newly implemented program in partnership with the Mid-Cumberland Regional Health Department.
The Mobile Health Unit, while making every effort to serve children regardless of their ability to pay, accepts insurance from AmeriChoice, AmeriGroup, BlueCross/ BlueShield, TennCare Select, CoverKids, Humana, Medicare, TriCare, CIGNA, and United Healthcare (UHC).
For uninsured patients, the fee will be determined on a sliding scale basis.
