Sheriff's detective Killings indicted | FATAL

Detective Ron Killings

A sheriff’s detective who was indicted Tuesday on a reckless homicide charge in the traffic death of an 11-year-old girl has resigned, Sheriff Truman Jones confirmed this morning.

Sgt. Ron Killings was charged with homicide of Lakeisha White of Hopkinsville, Ky., filing a false report and tampering with evidence by grand jurors, Jones said. He was booked into Rutherford County Adult Detention Center and released on $3,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in Circuit Court Feb. 17.

Murfreesboro Police said at the time Lakeisha was killed July 17 when she darted in front of Killings’ sheriff’s cruiser near the home of relatives on Bradyville Pike. He was on duty. Witnesses told police Killings tossed out a bottle of alcohol at the scene.

District Attorney William Whitesell said Killings’ blood-alcohol was negative.

Jones said Killings resigned this morning after learning of three felony indictments.

“We were definitely caught unaware how this panned out,” Jones said. “I have no idea how they (grand jurors) came to the conclusion they did.”

Jones said he couldn’t comment on the case because the sheriff’s office is not investigating.

“Ron is a man of integrity,” Jones said. “It’s a terrible blow to Ron, his family and the department.”

Jones said the “true value of the charges will come out once it’s been brought into the courtroom.”

Murfreesboro Police spokesman Kyle Evans said the department is aware of the charges but referring all questions to district attorney pro tem Joseph Baugh.

Baugh, who was named to prosecute the case after Whitesell recused himself, said he expects to exchange information with Killings' attorney in an effort to resolve the case.

In a press release, Killings’ supervisor Maj. Charles A. Thomas said the sheriff’s office will refer questions to Murfreesboro Police and Baugh.

“Sgt. Killings has been an exemplary officer and served his tenure here with integrity and unwavering dedication,” Thomas stated.

Killings joined the sheriff’s office Sept. 2, 1996 as a patrol officer. He was promoted to the detective division and later became a supervisor in the division.

“Sgt. Killings has been an exemplary officer and served his tenure here with integrity and unwavering dedication,”

The fact that he's being brought up on homicide charges seems to negate this statement.

From what the media portrayed about the little girl's family throughout this investigation and Killings history of morale ethics, I should say that I would have given a not guilty verdict.

I think the victum's family is going for all the insurance money they can get in and all American Sue Happy fashion. Since his blood alcohol level was negative, I don't know why he was covering up the bottle anyways. I guess he never saw this coming and who would....it was and accident totally. The Kid ran in front of his car, not like he swerved to hit her...which is what they are almost implying.

The news tonight showed the family after they learned about the indictment of Killings and the charges against him. The family was laughing and you could see the dollar signs in their eyes. They thought they had just won the lottery. I think the family should take some responsibility for letting that little girl out at night to run across the road. They all know how dangerous Bradyville Pike is.

NOT GUILTY! NOT GUILTY! NOT GUILTY!.......what about the "negligence" of the guardian of the girl... unfortuanate for all involved..

I can't believe the Grand Jury did this! I hope when this comes to trial the jury will see the real reason the family is destroying Ron's career-GREED!!

Some of you can't believe how this happened....

Well, for starters, none of us know what facts were presented to the grand jury (a panel made up of everyday citizens).

But let's take a look at what we do know (or at least what's been reported in the media):

- The officer had alcohol in his crusier against dept. policy (and purchased it while on the clock...taxpayer dime).

- He thought it more important to take time to dispose of said alcohol before rendering aid to his victim.

- His blood test was given to him several hours AFTER the incident...perhaps giving his body time to recover (perhaps not...but thanks to MPD, we'll never know).

- The proper chain of command and basic investigative rules were totally disregarded by MPD in this case (how many of you would have been driven home after an incident like this).

There are just too many questions for him NOT to be indicted.

Look at the charges:

1) Filing a false police report.
2) Tampering with evidence.

I'm sure these two charges led to the third charge of homicide.

These are serious charges against someone coined as "an exemplary officer". If it were any of us...we'd have been sitting in jail during this process.

As far as the family celebrating. They have every right to be happy with this latest development. Afterall....in this, the land of good ole' boy politics and favors...the chances of getting an indictment against a law enforcement officer was very slim from the start.

Let's see what comes out in court.

I'd like to see charges presented to the grand jury against the ones who tried to cover up this mess. If police are not held to a higher standard than citizens, they should at least be held to the same standard. Try covering up a crime and see if the police arrest you too. I'm sure this was a terrible accident, but the attempted coverup of evidence turned it into something else.

It's amazing it took so long to go to the grand jury? Is there real evidence, or just emotions involved?

I think killings had the booze in his car for later, he could have been taking it home to his wife for later we dont know. He threw the booze away because he knew he wasnt to have it in his patrole car and was trying to cover up the policy violation. Not that he was drunk, Did any one ever say the bottles were opened? or half empty? Whats this with the family with a ear to ear smile while on camera talking about the events, looks like they got $$$ in there eyes to me.

It doesn't matter what we think, it only matters what the jury will think when they hear all of the evidence. If he was driving beyond the speed limit to back up another officer without his warning lights and siren on, then, for all practical purposes, he was driving recklessly, which, then would justify a reckless homicide charge. The little girl may have crossed the road because she misinterpreted the amount of time it would take for the car to approach her. Since he was driving much faster than a car would normally, she tragically got hit by the speeding car. No one has said that he purposely hit the girl, which most of us would have a difficult time believing. He did hit her though, and he was driving too fast, and he didn't have any emergency equipment on to warn someone to stay clear. She was from Kentucky, not Bradyville pike, so she was not familiar with traffic patterns. It was not the responsibility of the 11 year old to know he was driving faster than the speed limit, it was the responsibility of the Detective to warn citizens of his fast approach with the use of emergency equipment. If you check the good Sheriff's department policy, Killings most likely violated those policies as well.
With that said, it is not for us to convict him here, it has been properly given to a jury where the merits of this case can be stewed over by 12 impartial citizens empowered to do justice. My feelings are that if he didn't do all of the stupid things afterward and if the Police Department didn't assist him to make those mistakes, then we wouldn't be having this discussion right now. It would have just been another awful accident like the other case year before last when yet another Sheriff's detective ran over and killed a man checking his mail in Nashville.

After reading some of your comments I wonder if those of you defending the Killings and the RCSD read everything that has been released to the public. First the MPD dropped the ball in a big way on this one , not only be not logging the bottles (by the way they where empty according to the report) how many people under these circumstances would a) be allowed to wait 2.5 hours before giving a blood sample and b) being able to leave the crime scene and go to the store to buy a sports drink before said test. If it was me or any other common person these two things would have never happened. What about the car why was it released to the custody of the RCSD the MPD was suppose to be the investigating agency. The biggest question for me is why didn't the RCSD do an internal investigation on this after all it involved RCSD property and an employee of the RCSD. At the very least Mr.Killings was in violation of having alcohol in or on county property and according to county policy this offense alone is grounds for termination. But wait we all know the answer for this, its the same old story the police looking out for one of their own FIRST the public second, and they wonder why people don't trust the police. Truman Jones wasn't blindsided he just thought this would blow over and be swept under the rug (a very lumpy rug). if he truly thought that no wrong was done there would have been in internal investigation done to prove no law or policy had been broken.

Wow, As a frequent poster of on this blog, I always end my posts with a notation that expressing one's own opinion is just that. So let me express my own opinion once again! WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?? first and foremost a child died, it doesn't matter the circumstances really, the fact is A CHILD DIED! You sit here and beat up the family??? You stick up for the person who killed her? So his BAC was negative, who cares? A CHILD IS DEAD!!! Who cares even if charges were not an issue? Get off your misplaced moral high horse and realize a life was cut short. The fact is, from the get go this investigation was fraught with mistakes, mishandling, and evidentiary issues! If you can't already tell, I"m SIMMERING and doing my best to remain reasonable. The Police and Sheriff's office are the reason there is this controversy. If things had been done as they would have been done if it had been me to hit the little girl, none of this would have happened. So the people sticking up for FORMER Detective Killings are saying that neither the MPD nor RCS did anything wrong??????? And if that's not what you are saying then your only other choice would be there was mishandling of the investigation. There are no other choices its a simple yes or no issue. They did or they didn't do something wrong! Moving right along HELLO???? TRUMAN??? You are the man in charge of Rutherford County Sheriff's department? You were blind sided by these charges?????? If Sheriff Jones and the MPD had treated this like any other investigation perhaps the Sheriff wouldn't have been so blind sided and seen this coming! Detective Killings is charged with Reckless Manslaughter (accident or not, a life was taken) he was charged with filing a FALSE police report, and lets not forget Tampering with evidence! These are all felony charges for heaven sake and his bond is set at $3000????? What the heck is up with that??????? I don't know what will happen, I don't know the outcome, What I do know is I'm totally disgusted with the lack of compassion in people and their willingness to make assumptions based on their own pompous views of the world from their lofty perches above the rest of us common folk!

By: citizenkane on 2/6/09
Bella, and you are not making assumptions based on your own pompous view of the world? there are two sides, and a court will determine who is right, so I wish everyone would just shut up! No one is going to be right, it is a no win situation whatever the outcome. A child is dead and a man's life, that never intended to hurt anyone, is in ruin. Enough!

By: BELLA on 2/6/09
Well, its nice to see all of FORMER Detective Killings friends supporting him, who on earth appointed you JUDGE AND JURY??? Additionally apparently you don't have children, 11 year olds are old enough to cross the road!!!!!! If they weren't then Rutherford County would offer bussing for schools to every student! What the heck is wrong with you people, you are making every excuse in the book these are NOT YOUR EXCUES TO MAKE! If you are chosen to sit on the jury then so be it, but until all the facts are presented by qualified Attorney's and deliberated over by a panel of FORMER Detective Killings peers. I'm sure you can guess by my recent posts how I feel but I"m not ignorant enough to pass judgement without knowing ALL the facts!

By: barrettbear on 2/6/09
If miss Bella knows so much, what are the policy and procedures for drug and alcohol testinf for a someone employeed in a safety sensitive position? Next, for every driver that strikes and kills a minor with a vehicle, are they all guilty of vehicular homocide? Last, but not least, do you know what policies and procedures are for city, county, and state police are following a post-related incident is inside another law enforcements domain?

What was that girl doing playing in the road anyway? I think Killings is getting a bad rap because he is a cop. Civilians run over people and kill em all the time and don't suffer half of the media bias that killings is getting. Maybe the girl was in a bad family inviroment and was running a way from something. Who knows. But all I know is that Killings is a good cop and shouldnt have to resign over something like this. Maybe something goods can come from this, kids need to learn not to play in the roads. I dont think the city officers did anything wrong either. They took pictures of the bottles, they just forgot to pick them up and take them as evidence. I think it was just a simple mistake and everybody is beating them up for it. Maybe when those witnesses were harrassing them, that made them confussed and they forget to pick up the bottles. If anyone is interested in helping with Killings legal expenses, the Sheriff has started a legal defense fund and you can donate there at their office.

citizenkane~A child is dead and a man's life, that never intended to hurt anyone, is in ruin.

former sgt. killings life isn't ruined. what nonsense!!! what selfish nonsense!!! oh, he's super inconvenienced i'm sure. but no, his life isn't ruined until he has to bury a small child of his own.
what sgt. killings did, he did to himself. since when is a child not allowed to cross the street on their bicycle??? that's generally why you often see caution signs noting, "CHILDREN AT PLAY". killings was not on the flipping autoban, he was on a road in a residential area, traveling at a high rate of speed, with liquor in his vehicle. that child committed no crime. killings did. further he was allowed to leave the scene, went to a convenience market and chugged two bottles of gatorade. we all know what gatorade's electrolytes does to a body with alcohol in it, right? it's not rocket science.
this makes me so ashamed of rcsd and mpd. there was a time when murfreesboro and rutherford co. law enforcement wasn't like this. a good, decent officer here is very few and far between nowadays.

bella, your post is right on! you should be angry, we should all be angry!!!
