A proposal to merge Rutherford County’s Adult Detention Center and Correctional Work Center was withdrawn Monday by Sheriff Robert F. Arnold.

Arnold said he withdrew the proposal during a meeting with County Mayor Ernest Burgess Monday morning because he wanted to work closer and build a better dialogue with the mayor and the County Commission on this and other issues.

“I made a mistake and didn’t go through the proper channels and procedures and that’s why I’m withdrawing my request,” Arnold said.

The County Commission’s Public Safety Committee was scheduled to discuss the proposal during a special meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Courthouse. The meeting was canceled early today.

Burgess said he agreed with the sheriff and his assessment.

“The timing for his discussion is inappropriate right in the middle of an extremely difficult budget session,” Burgess said, adding, he didn’t have any forewarning about the sheriff’s proposal. “In an effort to be cooperative in the future relationship, this is the appropriate approach to take at this time. We will endeavor to try to develop a working relationship between the Adult Detention Center and the Work Center and give our best effort to start building an improved relationship.”

Every time you turn around there's an article about Arnold in the paper. They can publish his endeavors, even mistakes, yet a friend of mine was hit by a yet unknown driver on his bicycle last week and I haven't seen anything about THAT in the paper. Seems priorities are out of order.
