Just noted a couple interesting things about this article. If the Sheriff caught this girl, why did he not arrest her instead of pawning it off on one of his employees. I thought he wanted to be THE WORKING SHERIFF. Sounds more like he just wants to give the impression to the public that he is competent without any follow up. You catch them you clean them has always been the rule in my house. Personally I would rather see him do the job some of you elected him to do and that is manage his department and be a good steward of OUR money. If he wants to run around and spend his time catching shoplifters, get another job as a patrolman and leave the one he has to someone with the right skills. He obviously makes a good patrol officer and likes to have his picture taken, but he has not demonstrated yet that he knows how to operate a 30 million dollar budget.
It sounds to me like you have an issue with the Sheriff personally.
To me it seems like the Sheriff was out on Sunday business, found the woman, and decided to have someone who was on duty take care of the situation. That looks like a proper use of resources.
And in response to your fishing analogy, the woman is not a fish who needs to be gutted. In this state I am sure we do not kill someone for shoplifting.
