One young homeless girl skipped and grinned in delight as she selected Christmas gifts for herself during the Shop with the Sheriff event last December.
“She was so excited and so thankful it touched every deputy’s heart,” said Deputy Jim Noe who coordinates the annual Shop with the Sheriff event. Because of lack of finances, the mother couldn’t afford to buy presents for her daughter.
Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office initiated the Shop with the Sheriff event last year to help 25 of the 600-plus homeless students enrolled in Rutherford County Schools. To fund the event, Sheriff Robert Arnold and other School Resource Officers partnered with Toot’s South restaurant by asking customers to donate money.
Toot’s and its customers raised enough funds for Sheriff Arnold, SROs and other deputies to accompany 25 homeless school children for breakfast at Shoney’s and a shopping trip to Kmart.
Sheriff Arnold and the SROs hope to accompany another 25 homeless children for Christmas shopping this December. They will ask diners to donate money during the second annual Shop with a Sheriff fund-raising event from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13 at Toot’s South restaurant at 2992A South Church St.
Toot’s South Manager John Renteria said Toot’s will offer diners two specials, the everyday burger and fries and the sheriff’s special, the chicken basket, Sheriff Arnold’s favorite menu item at Toot’s.
“We love doing this event, Shop with a Sheriff, because it gives us (Toot’s South) a chance to raise money for the children and those less fortunate,” Renteria said. “We want to be able to do something extra for the children so that they could have a happy and wonderful Christmas and holiday season. It’s just a great event to sponsor where we can bring people together at their favorite restaurant have a great experience and great food while helping a great cause.”
Sheriff Arnold thanked Toot’s for partnering with the sheriff’s office.
The Rutherford County Schools select 25 of the more than 600 identified homeless children for the shopping trip.
“We at the Sheriff’s Office want to give back to the kids and provide a joyful Christmas,” Sheriff Arnold said.
To view the Christmas spirit, Sheriff Arnold recommended citizens watch a video of last year’s Shop with the Sheriff on You Tube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hExogwVG65M or You Tube, Rutherford County Shop with a Sheriff Program.
Citizens who wish to donate may mail contributions for Shop with the Sheriff to Deputy Jim Noe, Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office, 940 New Salem Highway, Murfreesboro, Tenn., 37129 or drop donations by the sheriff’s office.
