Sheriff defends terrorist training course

A firestorm erupted last week after a local news station reported the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office used a questionable group to conduct anti-terrorism training for deputies.

On Monday, WMOT, MTSU’s public radio station, reported more than 100 Tennessee law enforcement officers, including deputies with the Sheriff’s Office, attended a three-day seminar on Islamic insurgency, titled “The Threat to America,” by the Strategic Engagement Group at World Outreach Church. SEG has come under fire in the past by the Southern Poverty Law Center for Islamophobic views.

Rutherford County Sheriff Robert Arnold defended the class and said the Sheriff’s Office was directed to SEG by the FBI.

“Chief (Randy Garrett) and I went to an FBI-sponsored human rights course where they taught about the Muslim faith ...” Arnold explained, adding he asked the presenters there about getting similar training for his deputies. “The FBI steered us in this direction.”

Arnold also said SEG’s training course is offered at no cost and is approved by the Tennessee Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission. It teaches law enforcement agents about homegrown terrorism, “what to look for and how to trace it back to its origins.

“I am trying to be proactive,” he continued. “We had to know who to deal with and how to deal with it.”

While Arnold didn’t attend this seminar, he did attend one a few years ago.

“We never heard any derogatory remarks made toward any faith,” he said.

But some groups think SEG is the wrong source for learning about how to deal with Muslims.

In a letter to Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Director Brian Grisham, Council on American-Islamic Relations National Legislative Director Corey Saylor said SEG is promoting its own anti-Muslim agenda in these course.

“We believe that SEG’s agenda-driven approach does not meet the real need for quality training for the men and women who protect public safety in Tennessee,” Saylor said. “False and inaccurate training is ultimately counterproductive and could have a detrimental effect on officers’ ability to fairly police the community they serve.”

According to SEG’s website the organization was “established in 2010 for the purpose of exposing and defeating efforts to subvert the United States Constitution and subjugate the American people.”

According to the CAIR, SEG is a hate group that promotes an anti-Muslim agenda. CAIR also called into question why the Tennessee Freedom Coalition – led by former congressional candidate and outspoken Islamic Center of Murfreesboro opponent Lou Ann Zelenik – held a separate seminar on Monday night at World Outreach Church.

“This program does not contain any information which could be remotely construed as hate speech nor is any information provided or presented not accurate and true,” TFC’s Jonna Bianco said in a press release.

Arnold said the Sheriff’s Office did not attend the TFC seminar, which was held separately from SEG’s training course. He also said the course is not a reaction to the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro and the Sheriff’s Office is not investing any Islamic terrorist activity at this time.

“This is for us to know how to deal with the Islamic community,” he said, comparing the training to classes deputies took years ago when the Laotian community was growing in Rutherford County.

But the American Muslim Advisory Council said in a press release, SEG and TFC are not the best ways to learn about Muslim culture.

“SEG is known for inciting hatred towards Muslims and promoting superfluous investigations of law-abiding Muslims to promote fear and division,” the organization said in a press release.

Arnold knows SEG is providing one side of the story and said his deputies will be taking another course, conducted by CAIR, at the end of February at the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s office in Nashville.

It is not surprising that the SEG and TFC programs are being held at the World Outreach Church. WOC will be the location of a (support Israel program) held by the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem. WOC Pastor Allen Jackson is a board member of the ICEJ and is on their speaker panel. One does not have to be very astute to figure out that if you support Israel financially and politically, that you are not likely to be favorably disposed to anything Islamic. Check out the ICEJ website. As unlikely as a terrorist attack is, if there were to be one, the WOC may have a bullseye painted on it.

“Palestinian” Mufti Ekrama Sabri incites Muslim mob who stone Christians on Temple Mount

Israel today Israel News Muslims stone Christians on Temple Mount
[February 19, 2012]

A mob of some 50 Palestinian Muslims stoned a group of Christian tourists atop Jerusalem’s Temple Mount on Sunday morning. Three of the Israeli police officers who acted to protect the Christian group were wounded by the stone-throwers.
Police arrested 11 Palestinians, several of them minors, for their role in the attack.

The attack is believed to have been instigated by the former Muslim mufti of Jerusalem, Ekrama Sabri, who told Palestinian media over the weekend that Jewish groups were planning to break into the mosques that occupy the holy compound and desecrate them.

Sabri urged all local Muslims to protect the mosques from “the Israeli conspiracy against the city and its holy places.”

Muslim religious figures regularly claim that Israel is plotting to destroy the Dome of the Rock and the Al Aqsa Mosque to pave the way for the rebuilding of the Jewish Temple, which the Muslims now insist never previously existed.

Because of the constant threat of Muslim violence, and despite the fact that the Temple Mount is the most holy place on earth to Jews and many Christians, the Israeli police comply with Muslim demands for harsh restrictions on non-Muslim visitors to the site. For instance, Jews and Christians are forbidden to carry Bibles atop the Temple Mount or to utter even silent prayers within its walls. Jews and Christians are regularly detained for violating these conditions.

In other violence, Palestinian terrorists operating out of the Gaza Strip fired a Grad-type missile at the southern Israel city of Beersheva on Saturday….

I agree with Sheriff Robert Arnold in defending the three day seminar on Islamic insurgency that the police officers attended. They were directed to take the Strategic Engagement Group’s course by the FBI so that shows that there is concern about the threat of Islamic terrorism within the borders of the United States. Islam is the religion that does most of the terrorist acts today so this in my opinion was a very necessary course to take – especially in a post 9/11 era. Since the seminar was on Islamic terrorism and not just about Islam itself, there should be no reason why it would offend people. If Muslims claim that terrorism is not part of the religion then why should they be mad that the police force wants to be ready just in case they have to deal with an act of terrorism? The seminar wasn’t necessarily about fighting Islam, just the terrorists. It is commonly seen nowadays to call anything that opposes Islamic terrorism “racist” or “discriminatory” and even though Islam spawns the most terrorism out of all the other religions combined it is considered “hate speech” to even state that. I’m not saying that we need to discriminate against Muslims here in America, I’m just saying that it doesn’t hurt to learn how to deal with acts of terrorism and learning such knowledge shouldn’t be seen as discriminatory.

This week has been a lot of concern with tension in Israel. I agree why police officials all over the world are worried about the threat of Islamic terrorism within the borders of the United States.
As of Monday, radio stations such as WMOT and MTSU’s public radio station, reported more than 100 Tennessee law enforcement officers, attended a three day seminar on Islamic insurgency. This seminar called, “The Threat to America,” teaches law enforcement agents about terrorism, “what to look for and how to trace it back to its origins”. But what exactly occurs in the training?
I understand groups such as American-Islamic Relations think claim the seminar is ran by people who hate muslims. I think there are terrorists in the world other than Muslims. We have this tendency to associate the people involved in 9/11 attacks as “killers”. I don’t think that will ever change. I do think people should know more about terrorists and where it came from.
Safety is always a priority. The United States just wants to avoid another 9/11 event from occurring. Although I think a seminar for police officers that help a community is benefical, I think terrorism will be an on-going issue.

I can see why the police officers were required to take a seminar on how to prevent terrorism, but if they are told to watch out for Muslims from the very start, then they may be accusing innocents just because they are Muslim. They are told that Muslims are most likely the terrorists, therefore they will only be looking for Muslims to commit terrorism, but they may just let the real terrorists, who may or may not be Muslim, slip away. There are a large number of terrorists in every country, including Muslim dominated countries, and from experience I can say that majority of the terrorists are not even Muslim. Islam is a religion of peace, if the officers really want to learn about terrorism they should stop being so racist and actually learn about the religion for once rather than what they just hear. Each police officer taking the course should be required to read the Quran; only then would they really understand the religion. Islam promotes peace, not violence. The whole entire religion should not be based off of the mistakes done by a small number of people. It is not even finalized that the attackers were Muslim; it was assumed. Sure they could have been Middle Eastern, but there is a large majority of Christian Middle Eastern people also. If the police really wants to stop the act of terrorism, they should look into groups of people based off of their lifestyle, not their religion. That is simply racist and offensive to the whole Islamic community. The statement that “Islam spawns the most terrorism” is not true. It has only been one small group, and according to my history book, the Oklahoma City Bombings in 1995 were started by American Terrorists, one of which was a United States Army veteran. These attacks were the whole reason why the Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996 was passed. If Muslims are considered terrorists, then Americans should be considered terrorists also.

I think Sheriff Robert Arnold is just trying to follow the advice of the FBI to protect our country. The FBI are one of the most knowledgeable agencies regarding domestic terrorism, as they directly deal with it on occasion. It is important to understand how Islamist groups think. Islamists are a minority, as they hold corrupted views of Islam which most Muslims would reject. But they do sometimes have influences on the broader Muslim culture, and are powerful in some areas.
His actions show his concern for dealing with extremists; Which should be balanced by the subsequent training regarding Islam in general. This should provide them with balanced views and knowledge regarding these issues that police may well be facing in the immediate future. However it probably would have been better to find groups not alleged to be involved with Islamophobic views. I hope the officers will recognize the differences between the beliefs of most Muslims and those of Islamic extremists.
I hope they have training regarding terrorism in general as well. Such extremism is not exclusive to Muslims. The United States has had to deal with non-Muslim terrorists before and likely will again. They should not forget about other groups just because of the events of 9/11 and the rise of Islamists. As it is new, they need to have as much information as possible to keep this country safe. We should be safe, as long as they recognize the differences between regular Muslims and Islamists while not forgetting to watch for other groups and threats.
